Ravnholt

Ravnholt is an old forest village whose people have lived from the surrounding woodland for generations. Hunting, trapping, gathering and forestry are part of everyday life, and many villagers know the nearby trails as well as they know the roads between their own homes. The forest is not considered inherently dangerous, but it is treated with a respect that outsiders sometimes mistake for fear.

Hunters traditionally leave the first animal they see unusually close to the village unharmed, and woodsmen avoid cutting trees marked by old carvings they cannot recognize. Nothing taken from the forest should be wasted, and anyone gathering berries, mushrooms or herbs is expected to leave some behind. Whistling in the woods after sunset is strongly discouraged, even among those who laugh at most old beliefs.

One rule is taught particularly early: if someone calls your name from the forest, you should see who is calling before you answer. If you cannot see them, remain silent.

Local Mystery — The Missing Paths

People in Ravnholt occasionally return from the forest insisting that a familiar trail disappeared.

A hunter may follow a path used hundreds of times only to find unfamiliar trees ahead. A woodsman can walk toward Ravnholt and emerge hours later farther from the village than when he began. Sometimes old trails appear where nobody remembers one existing.

Most blame darkness, exhaustion or poor weather.

But there is one detail the stories often share.

Those who become lost sometimes hear the sounds of Ravnholt nearby—the chapel bell, an axe striking wood, voices, even laughter from the village.

Following those sounds never seems to lead home.
