Torvald

Torvald is one of Skógdalr's oldest farming villages, and life here is measured as much by the seasons as by the calendar. Planting, haymaking, livestock and harvest shape the year, while traditions surrounding weather and the land remain important even among villagers who consider themselves skeptical of old stories.

The first grain harvested each year is never sold, and bread baked from it is shared between the oldest farming families. During the final harvest, nobody works the fields after sunset. Farmers also pay close attention to their animals: when an entire herd refuses to enter a particular pasture, forcing them is considered foolish. Before winter, many families leave a small portion of grain in their barns for the Gårdstomte.

One saying has survived particularly well in Torvald: “The land knows the season before we do.”

Local Mystery — The Early Harvest

Some years, a single field somewhere around Torvald ripens far too early.

There is no pattern to which farm it chooses. One evening the crop appears completely ordinary; by morning, every stalk has turned golden and stands ready for harvest, sometimes weeks before the surrounding fields.

The grain is healthy. Bread can be baked from it, animals will eat it, and nobody has ever become ill from the crop.

Still, older families refuse to harvest it.

They wait.

Within a few days, something usually happens—a sudden frost, violent rain, an unexpected drought or another change in the weather that damages fields throughout the surrounding countryside.

The early field is always untouched.

In Torvald, they say the land was never offering an early harvest. It was giving a warning.
