The Tritons of Veloria and Skybride

Tritons are said to dwell in cities beneath the waves—though what humans call cities, they might call sanctuaries, memories, or songs made stone. These deepwater enclaves are shaped by current and bioluminescent coral and governed by rhythms older than the moon. Though most Tritons remain submerged, a rare few choose to surface. Their reasons vary: some flee unrest in the depths, some come bearing warnings from the sea, and some are simply drawn by curiosity.

In ancient days, Tritons who engaged with surface civilizations were met with suspicion. Maritime cultures often viewed them as omens—harbingers of storms or shipwrecks. Sailors misread their haunting songs as curses, mistaking prophecy for malice. It was not until the time of Eremos, the Alendrian poet, that perceptions began to shift. His verses, inspired by a Triton encounter, reframed them as mournful guardians of the deep. Later, as the faith of Stella Maris spread across the coastlines of Skybride, Tritons were embraced as sacred emissaries of the sea goddess.

Even so, they remain elusive. Their appearances are rare and often shrouded in mystery. Some coastal temples claim to host Triton visitors during lunar rites, while others speak of salt-born children with Triton blood. Sister Nimue, a priestess in the Chamber of Stella Maris is a Triton—her presence in Veloria a living echo of the sea’s wisdom and sorrow.
