The Open Ledger

The Open Ledger

Kiojafell Point of Interest

Outside the Boar’s Head Tavern and Inn, bolted into old stone and sheltered by a shallow awning, stands a weather-worn oak board known simply as the Open Ledger.

It is not a guild posting.
It is not protected by law.
It endures anyway.

The Ledger exists as a shared understanding among the people of Kiojafell: if work needs doing, it goes on the board. Monster sightings, escorts through the Astrean Wilds, salvage claims, missing kin, bounties, personal favors—anything short of slavery or forced conscription may appear. Anyone may post. Anyone may take a notice down.

Payment is not guaranteed by authority, only reputation. Those who fail to honor their postings find their names scratched into the wood beneath the board, sometimes crossed out, sometimes carved deeper. Those who abandon contracts often discover that Kiojafell remembers.

The Ledger has no official rules, yet certain patterns persist. Slaver work never lasts. Notices tied to coercion vanish overnight. Contracts that threaten the town itself are quietly removed before sunrise. No one claims responsibility. No one needs to.

Adventurers quickly learn that the Ledger is more than a job board—it is a rumor engine. Notices change, reappear, or return marked with blood-red chalk: FAILED. Others vanish without explanation, assumed resolved… or worse.

For newcomers, the Open Ledger is often the first choice they are asked to make in Atherfall. What they take from it—and whether they finish the work—begins to define who they become.

In Kiojafell, opportunity is always posted in public.

So are the consequences.
