The Original Elders

(The 50-Year Survivors)

These individuals represent the "First Batch"—the survivors of the original cruise ship disaster. Having lived on the islands for half a century, they have seen the community transition from the horrors of Bush Island to the "stability" of Lucas Priestley’s Fire Island.

To reflect their status as the "Originals" who have survived half a century on the islands, these three items are common across all ten elders, regardless of their faith. These items represent the passage of time and their shared history from the first crash.

The Elders' Collective Belongings

  • The Survivor’s Walking Staff: A sturdy limb of "Ironwood" harvested from the deep forests of Bush Island. Over 50 years, these staffs have been polished to a high sheen by the oils of their hands.

    • For the Believers: The top is often capped with a piece of obsidian or a "Fire God" charm.

    • For the Dissenters: The staff often has hidden notches or carvings that represent years passed, serving as a private calendar of their exile.

  • The First-Year Relic: Every original survivor carries a small, worn-down object salvaged from the cruise ship wreckage 50 years ago. These are the last physical tethers to the world outside.

    • Examples: A rusted silver spoon, a dulled wedding ring, a heavy brass coat button, or a fragment of a ceramic dinner plate.

    • The Meaning: To Lucas, these are trophies of what they overcame; to the Bentleys, they are holy relics of a home they lost.

  • Woven Sea-Grass Shawl: A heavy, multi-layered garment woven from dried kelp and coastal grasses. While the younger Senna wear lighter linens, the elders often feel a "spiritual chill" or simply require more protection for their aging bones.

    • Function: These shawls are waterproof and highly durable, serving as bedding, a rain cloak, or a formal garment during the morning prayers at the Circle.
