Monster & Encounter Backgrounds

Encounter Principles – Human, Mechanical and Rare Anomalous Threats

The dangers encountered across Terra Expanse are overwhelmingly human, mechanical, environmental, or otherwise rooted in established technology and biology. Strange creatures or machines do exist, but genuinely alien, biomechanical, supernatural, or physics-defying entities are exceptional and usually connected to a known research program, anomalous site, or other established cause. An unexplained monstrosity appearing without such context would be highly unusual.

Authority, Security & Military

UTA Peacekeeper

Routine UTA security personnel. Usually observe, question, warn, and contain problems before using force. Follow orders and local regulations.

MCR Soldier

Disciplined Martian military personnel. Usually professional and cautious; they question suspicious behavior and escalate according to orders and the threat.

Trained for crowd control and public disorder. Attempts to contain, separate, and disperse before using force.

Corporate Security Contractor

Protects corporate property, personnel, and restricted areas. Prioritizes orders and liability over heroics.

Traffic Control Operative

Belter Dock Security Officer

Protects docks, cargo, and access points. Practical and alert; usually challenges suspicious behavior rather than attacking without cause.

Vostok Containment Specialist

Treats containment breaches as emergencies. Secures areas, orders people away, and may detain anyone interfering with containment.

Security Drone

Follows its assigned security parameters. It observes, identifies, warns, and escalates only when its programming or orders require it.

Belt Workers, Mercenaries & Criminals

Belter Mercenary

Armed short-term hired muscle. Usually practical, cautious, and motivated by pay, reputation, or obligation. Prefers intimidation, negotiation, or withdrawal over unnecessary combat.

Belter Mining Claim Guard

Protects a mining claim, equipment, and valuable resources. Suspicious of outsiders and territorial, but may negotiate when the claim is not directly threatened.

Belter Shipyard Saboteur

A covert industrial saboteur focused on damaging or disabling shipyard operations. Avoids unnecessary exposure and usually retreats when discovered.

Belter Bounty Hunter

Tracks fugitives and missing persons for payment. Patient and observant; prefers information, surveillance, and controlled confrontation over reckless violence.

Belter Smuggler's Enforcer

Protects smuggling operations and valuable cargo. Intimidates first and fights when necessary, but avoids drawing attention to the wider operation.

Black Market Courier

Moves illicit goods discreetly. Avoids attention, questions, and violence; may flee, lie, bargain, or abandon cargo when cornered.

Canal Smuggler

Moves people or illicit cargo through hidden waterways and service routes. Avoids authorities and prefers escape or negotiation over open confrontation.

Urban Gang Enforcer

Protects gang territory and interests. Uses intimidation readily and escalates when challenged, but may retreat when faced with serious resistance.

Vertical Zone Gang Enforcer

Controls access, collects debts, and protects local gang interests. Territorial and intimidating, but usually avoids unnecessary violence that attracts authorities.

Desperate Thief

Steals from necessity rather than ideology. Attempts a quick theft and escape; if caught, may panic, bargain, flee, or attack only when escape seems impossible.

Street Tough

An ordinary person who has learned that intimidation and violence work. May provoke or rob strangers, but is not a trained killer and may back down when seriously challenged.

Rowdy Teenager

A disruptive adolescent acting with a small group. Taunts, blocks paths, throws objects, and tests boundaries; usually retreats when confronted with serious resistance.

Drunken Brawler

Someone who has had too much to drink and is looking for trouble. Provokes easily, starts fights impulsively, and may flee, surrender, or calm down after taking a beating.

Cargo Hijacker

Targets valuable shipments during transfer or storage. Uses deception and compromised access before resorting to force, and retreats when an operation becomes too risky.

Orbital Stowaway

A fugitive traveler hiding aboard transport. Avoids attention and confrontation, relying on deception, stealth, and desperate escape rather than violence.

Terra & Industrial Operators

Offshore Platform Saboteur

Covertly disrupts offshore energy and production infrastructure. Prefers disguise, manipulation, and escape; violence is usually a means of avoiding capture.

Energy Smuggler

Diverts or illegally distributes energy, fuel, or power infrastructure. Practical and profit-driven; avoids direct conflict when cooperation or bribery works.

Solar Grid Raider

Targets exposed solar infrastructure and energy storage. Interested in equipment, power, or leverage rather than unnecessary fighting.

Corporate Eviction Officer

Removes unauthorized occupants from corporate property. Relies on legal authority, intimidation, and security support before direct force.

Lift-Shaft Runner

Fast courier or infiltrator using maintenance shafts and vertical infrastructure. Avoids confrontation and relies on speed, familiarity, and escape routes.

Undercity Scavenger

Searches neglected infrastructure for useful materials and salvage. Wary of strangers and protective of valuable finds, but usually avoids needless violence.

Corporate Data Broker

Trades in confidential information and access. Prefers manipulation, negotiation, and discreet deals; physical confrontation is usually a last resort.

Civilian Protester

A participant in a public demonstration. May argue, obstruct, or call others for help, but is not automatically violent and may disengage if left alone.

Pipeline Raider

Controls or exploits local water infrastructure. Often territorial and protective of their supply; may actively order strangers away before resorting to force.

Water Syndicate Enforcer

Collects payments and protects illegal water distribution. Uses intimidation to maintain control and may defend diverted supplies, but can recognize practical compromises.

Desalination Saboteur

A covert technical infiltrator targeting desalination systems. Focused on the mission and avoiding detection; normally escapes rather than fights.

Malfunctioning Maintenance Drone

A damaged industrial drone operating outside its intended parameters. Behavior is erratic and driven by faulty routines rather than malice.

Industrial Exosuit Operator

A worker operating heavy machinery for construction, repair, or cargo work. Normally focused on the job and not hostile unless threatened or ordered to intervene.

Floodwall Saboteur

Attempts to damage or disable flood-control infrastructure. Works covertly and avoids unnecessary exposure; may flee when discovered.

Delta Salvage Diver

Searches flooded structures for salvage and valuables. Usually cautious and independent, with little reason to fight unless threatened or competing for a valuable find.

Mars Intelligence & Operations

Martian Intelligence Operative

Works discreetly for MCR intelligence. Observes, gathers information, and maintains a cover identity. Avoids open conflict unless the mission requires intervention.

Terraforming Saboteur

Targets atmospheric, water, or ecological infrastructure for a larger objective. Avoids attention and prioritizes completing or escaping from the operation.

Archive Retrieval Operative

Recovers classified samples, data, technology, or escaped subjects for the Vostok Black Archive. Uses surveillance, deception, and controlled restraint rather than public confrontation.

Vostok Research & Anomalies

Escaped Research Subject

Frightened, confused, and unfamiliar with their surroundings. May hide, flee, or seek help; dangerous reactions are usually triggered by fear or perceived pursuit.

Bioengineered Research Organism

An artificial organism with fragmented instincts and unstable awareness. Behavior is driven by unfamiliar stimuli, fear, conditioning, or environmental triggers rather than human motives.

Transient Spatial Distortion

Has no mind, intent, or physical body. Its effects are unpredictable spatial anomalies; do not assign it motives or deliberate behavior.
