The Undercity and Bhaalist
The Undercity: The original, ancient city that stood on the site long before Balduran's arrival. It was buried and built over. This labyrinth of tunnels, sewers, and ruins is now home to thieves, monsters, cultists, and things best left unnamed.
The Temple of Bhaal: Deep within the Undercity lies an ancient temple to Bhaal, the God of Murder. This temple is a place of immense evil and power.
The Bhaalspawn Crisis: Decades ago, the deity Bhaal, foreseeing his own death, sired a multitude of mortal children to act as vessels for his resurrection. Many of these "Bhaalspawn" were drawn to Baldur's Gate, their divine blood calling them to the temple of their father. This led to a period of intense violence known as the Bhaalspawn Crisis or the Time of Troubles, where the city was terrorized by a mysterious murderer known as the "Iron Throne" and a cabal of doppelgangers. A hero arose to stop the machinations of Sarevok, one of the most powerful Bhaalspawn, who sought to plunge the entire Sword Coast into war to become the new God of Murder.
