BLOCK 72 — GM BLOCK: The Covenant of the Broken Hour

The Covenant of the Broken Hour is a GM arc centered on time, memory, causality, and the unraveling of events across Thalmaris. Unlike the Shattered Meridian Crisis, which destabilizes the land, or the Thousand‑Eyes Convergence, which destabilizes trust, or the Fractured Atlas Protocol, which destabilizes direction, the Covenant of the Broken Hour destabilizes sequence. It is an arc designed to challenge players’ assumptions about cause and effect, force factions to confront forgotten histories, and reveal truths buried in the world’s timeline.

The arc begins with small anomalies — events occurring out of order, memories shifting, relics appearing before they are discovered, creatures behaving as if they have lived multiple lives. These anomalies are subtle at first, easily dismissed as hallucinations, Rift distortions, or stress. But they grow. Soon, entire regions experience temporal drift. Storm corridors replay lightning strikes. Volcanic eruptions occur twice. Abyssal trenches collapse, then un‑collapse. Subterranean tunnels echo with voices from the future. The world’s timeline begins to fracture.

The first faction to react is the Marrowspire Covenant. Their osteomancers detect temporal residue in bone — marrow that remembers events that have not yet happened, skeletal patterns that shift between states, creatures whose bones show multiple lifetimes. The Covenant declares the anomalies biological time fractures.

The Deep Lantern Order detects echo anomalies — sounds repeating, voices overlapping, cavern resonance forming loops. Echo Lanterns report hearing conversations that have not yet occurred. The Order begins mapping temporal echoes.

The Storm‑Chain Authority observes atmospheric anomalies — lightning strikes repeating, storm fronts reversing direction, sky‑routes looping. Thunderlink mages attempt to bind these anomalies, but the storms resist.

The Obsidian Accord detects tectonic anomalies — tremors occurring in reverse, fault lines shifting back into previous positions, volcanic chambers cooling and reheating. Stonebound geomancers struggle to stabilize land that refuses to remain in the present.

The Tide‑Marked Dominion reports oceanic anomalies — currents reversing, leviathans migrating in loops, abyssal pressure rising and falling in cycles. Depthmark operatives descend into unstable waters.

The Ashen Veil Consortium begins acquiring relics that appear before they are discovered. They suspect the anomalies are connected to ancient time‑binding artifacts.

The Hollow Crown Syndicate experiences identity anomalies — masks remembering faces they have not yet worn, missions failing before they begin, operatives encountering future versions of themselves.

The Emberwake Inquisition declares the anomalies corruption. They begin Purification campaigns targeting regions with temporal instability.

The Covenant of the Broken Hour unfolds in five escalating phases, each revealing deeper truths.

Phase 1: The Flicker Events

Small temporal anomalies occur across Thalmaris. Events flicker — repeating, reversing, or skipping. Memories shift. Relics appear early. Creatures behave strangely.

GM Tools:

  • Subtle foreshadowing

  • Memory challenges

  • Investigation hooks

  • Early faction involvement

  • Retrieval missions

Symptoms:

  • Storm strikes repeat

  • Rift distortions loop

  • Abyssal pressure cycles

  • Cavern echoes replay

  • Volcanic tremors reverse

Phase 2: The Broken Hourglass

Temporal anomalies intensify. Regions experience time drift. Storm corridors loop. Rift zones replay distortions. Abyssal trenches collapse and un‑collapse. Subterranean tunnels echo with future voices.

GM Tools:

  • Hazard escalation

  • Multi‑region instability

  • Faction conflict

  • Rescue missions

  • Exploration of unstable zones

Symptoms:

  • Volcanic eruptions repeat

  • Rift anomalies replay

  • Storm corridors reverse

  • Abyssal pressure surges

  • Cavern networks shift

Phase 3: The Hour Covenant

The Marrowspire Covenant reveals the truth — an ancient group known as the Hour Covenant once maintained temporal stability. They used relics known as Hour Anchors to bind time. These Anchors have fractured.

GM Tools:

  • Multi‑faction diplomacy

  • Retrieval of Anchor fragments

  • Combat encounters with time‑warped creatures

  • Political intrigue

  • Exploration of ancient ruins

Hour Anchor Types:

  • Ash Anchor — volcanic time stability

  • Rift Anchor — dimensional time stability

  • Storm Anchor — atmospheric time stability

  • Abyss Anchor — oceanic time stability

  • Echo Anchor — subterranean time stability

Each Anchor is failing.

Phase 4: The Hour Collapse

Temporal fractures deepen. Events occur out of order. Cause and effect break down. Factions experience consequences before actions. The world becomes unstable.

GM Tools:

  • High‑stakes missions

  • Multi‑region exploration

  • Combat encounters with time‑warped anomalies

  • Retrieval of Anchor cores

  • Faction conflict escalation

Symptoms:

  • Storms occur before clouds form

  • Rift anomalies appear before fractures

  • Abyssal creatures surface before pressure rises

  • Cavern collapses occur before tremors

  • Volcanic eruptions occur before magma rises

Phase 5: The Hour Reforging

The arc culminates in locating the Hour Core, an ancient temporal engine buried beneath Thalmaris. The Core is damaged, unstable, and leaking time. Factions converge on the Core. Some seek to repair it. Some seek to control it. Some seek to destroy it.

GM Tools:

  • Final confrontation

  • Multi‑faction alliances

  • Diplomatic arcs

  • Combat encounters with Hour constructs

  • Repair, containment, or destruction arcs

  • World‑changing consequences
