BLOCK 81 — SYSTEMS & MECHANICS: Exploration & Travel Mechanics

Exploration & Travel Mechanics define how characters move through Thalmaris — a world where every environment is hostile, unstable, and shaped by forces that can kill the unprepared. Travel is not a simple act; it is a system of risk, strategy, preparation, and environmental negotiation. Routes shift, hazards escalate, factions control key passages, and relics alter the landscape.

This system governs how players traverse volcanic corridors, Riftlands fractures, storm‑routes, abyssal drift‑routes, subterranean cavern networks, and biological mutation zones. It also defines how exploration interacts with hazards, factions, relics, and world events.

Exploration is divided into six primary route types:

  • Volcanic Routes

  • Rift Routes

  • Storm Routes

  • Abyssal Routes

  • Subterranean Routes

  • Biological Routes

Each route type has unique mechanics, dangers, travel requirements, and faction interactions. Travel is not guaranteed — routes can collapse, shift, or become lethal without warning.

EXPLORATION OVERVIEW

Exploration represents movement through unstable environments. It is shaped by:

  • hazard severity

  • faction control

  • environmental instability

  • relic activation

  • creature migration

  • weather patterns

  • Rift distortion

  • subterranean resonance

  • abyssal pressure

Exploration is measured through Travel Checks, Route Stability, Environmental Modifiers, and Exploration Events.

TRAVEL CHECKS

Travel Checks determine whether characters successfully navigate a route. Checks vary by environment and hazard severity.

Check Types

  • Navigation Checks — finding safe paths

  • Hazard Checks — resisting environmental danger

  • Endurance Checks — surviving long travel

  • Awareness Checks — detecting threats

  • Stability Checks — avoiding collapse or distortion

Check Difficulty

Difficulty is based on hazard tier:

  • Tier I: Easy

  • Tier II: Moderate

  • Tier III: Hard

  • Tier IV: Deadly

Modifiers apply based on faction assistance, relics, gear, and environmental conditions.

ROUTE STABILITY

Route Stability determines whether a route remains safe, collapses, shifts, or becomes lethal.

Stability Levels

  • Stable: Safe to travel

  • Unstable: Hazard risk increases

  • Shifting: Route changes direction

  • Collapsing: Route becomes dangerous

  • Broken: Route is unusable

Stability is affected by hazards, relics, faction control, and world events.

ENVIRONMENTAL MODIFIERS

Environmental Modifiers alter travel difficulty. Modifiers stack and can drastically change route conditions.

Modifier Types

  • Heat Modifiers — volcanic regions

  • Distortion Modifiers — Rift zones

  • Wind Modifiers — storm corridors

  • Pressure Modifiers — abyssal routes

  • Resonance Modifiers — subterranean tunnels

  • Mutation Modifiers — biological zones

Modifiers increase or decrease Travel Check difficulty.

EXPLORATION EVENTS

Exploration Events occur during travel. Events can be beneficial, neutral, or dangerous.

Event Types

  • Hazard Events — eruptions, distortions, storms

  • Creature Events — ambushes, migrations

  • Relic Events — activation, corruption

  • Faction Events — patrols, raids

  • Environmental Events — collapse, shift, surge

Events can alter route stability, hazard severity, or faction influence.

VOLCANIC ROUTES

Volcanic Routes traverse magma fields, ash corridors, thermal plains, and volcanic ridges. They are shaped by heat, pressure, eruptions, and ash storms.
