BLOCK 87 — SYSTEMS & MECHANICS: Drugs, Alcohol, & Intoxicant Systems

The Drugs, Alcohol, & Intoxicant Systems define how chemical, biological, environmental, and magical substances affect individuals in Thalmaris. Unlike traditional RPG consumables, intoxicants in Thalmaris are dangerous, unpredictable, and deeply tied to the world’s instability. They can empower, corrupt, mutate, or destroy. Addiction is real. Withdrawal is brutal. Social consequences matter. Factions weaponize substances. Environments alter their effects. Relics amplify or distort them.

This system governs how intoxicants are created, consumed, metabolized, abused, regulated, and weaponized. It also defines how substances interact with hazards, corruption, trauma, faction politics, and character progression.

Intoxicants are divided into six primary categories:

  • Volcanic Intoxicants

  • Rift Intoxicants

  • Storm Intoxicants

  • Abyssal Intoxicants

  • Subterranean Intoxicants

  • Biological Intoxicants

Each category has unique effects, risks, addiction profiles, withdrawal symptoms, and faction associations.

INTOXICANT OVERVIEW

Intoxicants in Thalmaris are shaped by:

  • environmental hazards

  • biological mutation

  • faction production

  • relic corruption

  • magic discipline

  • social brutality

  • survival pressure

Intoxicants are measured through Potency, Risk, Addiction, Corruption, and Withdrawal.

INTOXICANT MECHANICS

Potency

Potency determines the strength of an intoxicant’s effects. Potency ranges from 1 to 10.

Risk

Risk determines the likelihood of negative effects. Risk ranges from 1 to 10.

Addiction

Addiction determines how quickly dependence forms. Addiction ranges from 0 to 100.

Corruption

Corruption determines how much the substance alters biology or magic. Corruption ranges from 0 to 100.

Withdrawal

Withdrawal determines the severity of symptoms when the substance is removed. Withdrawal ranges from 0 to 100.

Addiction Profile

  • high psychological addiction

  • low physical addiction

Withdrawal

  • hallucinations

  • gravity instability

  • panic episodes

  • distortion echoes

Corruption Interaction

Rift intoxicants amplify:

  • distortion magic

  • gravity spells

  • fracture abilities

But destabilize:

  • storm magic

STORM INTOXICANTS

Storm intoxicants are shaped by lightning, wind, thunder, and atmospheric instability. They are used by Storm‑Chain Authority, sky‑route runners, and lightning plains nomads.

Examples

  • Thunderbrew — sonic‑charged liquor

  • Lightning Resin Shots — electrical stimulant

  • Windglass Vapor — inhaled air‑crystal mist

  • Stormmetal Tonic — conductive alcohol

Effects

  • increased reflexes

  • lightning resistance

  • wind awareness

  • sonic perception

Risks

  • electrical burns

  • wind shear disorientation

  • thunder shock

  • heart strain

Addiction Profile

  • moderate physical addiction

  • moderate psychological addiction

Withdrawal

  • nerve pain

  • reflex slowdown

  • auditory sensitivity

  • dizziness

Corruption Interaction

Storm intoxicants amplify:

  • lightning spells

  • wind abilities

  • thunder resonance

But destabilize:

  • abyssal magic

  • subterranean spells

ABYSSAL INTOXICANTS

Abyssal intoxicants are shaped by pressure, darkness, leviathan song, and oceanic instability. They are used by Tide‑Marked Dominion, Far Deep Voyagers, and trench divers.

Examples

  • Pressure Mead — compressed oceanic liquor

  • Leviathan Song Tincture — resonant stimulant

  • Abyssal Resin Draught — dark organic brew

  • Trenchwater Spirits — pressure‑infused alcohol

Effects

  • pressure resistance

  • darkness tolerance

  • song resonance sensitivity

  • calm under stress

Risks

  • pressure sickness

  • hallucinations

  • bone compression

  • oxygen deprivation

Addiction Profile

  • low physical addiction

  • high psychological addiction

Withdrawal

  • panic

  • pressure hallucinations

  • darkness anxiety

  • bone aches

Corruption Interaction

Abyssal intoxicants amplify:

  • pressure spells

  • darkness abilities

  • song resonance

But destabilize:

  • volcanic magic

  • storm spells

SUBTERRANEAN INTOXICANTS

Subterranean intoxicants are shaped by resonance, vibration, cavern collapse, and echo anomalies. They are used by Deep Lantern Order, cavern nomads, and resonance cults.

Examples
