Page 3- the descent

The morning Thorin Blackwood left Kael-Suun, there was no grand celebration, only a heavy, grieving silence. He didn't wear the dark rags of a scout or the blood-stained leather of an assassin. He dressed in the sturdy, warm wool and cured furs of a northern woodsman—simple, functional, and devoid of any mark that would link him to the Ghost.

The Parting Gift

As he reached the village gates, the Elders met him one last time. They didn't ask him to stay; they knew the look of a man called by a debt they couldn't understand.

  • The Cold-Iron Staff: They presented him with a walking staff forged from the very iron he had salvaged from the dragon’s lair. It was a symbol of his status as their savior, but Thorin knew it was also a weapon—one that could shatter a man’s guard without the need for a blade.

  • The Blessing of the Hearth: The village children gave him a small, carved stone from the thermal-siphons he had built. He tucked it into his pocket, a physical reminder that his hands were capable of creating warmth, even as he headed toward a world of cold iron.

The First Encounter: The Northern Outpost

Three days into his descent, the air began to thicken with the smell of smoke and stagnant water. At the base of the Peaks, Thorin came across a "Processing Waypoint" that hadn't existed ten years ago. It was a makeshift camp flying the tattered black flag of The Silent Hand.

  • The Observation: From the treeline, Thorin watched. He saw a group of hooded traffickers loading a line of shackled refugees into a barred wagon. He saw the "Eye" brand on their wrists.

  • The Restraint: The "Old Ghost" would have been in the camp in seconds, leaving a trail of pikes. Thorin, the "nicer and brighter" man, did something different. He stepped out into the road, leaning on his staff, looking like nothing more than a weary, white-haired traveler.

The Test of the New Leaf

When the traffickers intercepted him, laughing at the "old man" who had wandered into their territory, Thorin didn't draw a weapon. He spoke with a calm, resonant kindness.

  • The Negotiation: He offered them a small pouch of Kael-Suun silver in exchange for the freedom of the youngest child in the line. He gave them a chance to walk away—a "New Leaf" of their own.

  • The Resulting Violence: The traffickers chose greed. As they moved to seize him, Thorin moved with a fluid, non-lethal grace that baffled them. He didn't kill; he disabled. He used his staff to strike pressure points and break limbs, leaving the traffickers alive but incapable of continuing their trade.

The Realization of the Rot

After freeing the refugees and directing them toward the hidden paths of Kael-Suun, Thorin stood alone in the abandoned camp. He looked at the paperwork left behind—ledgers detailing "Labor Credits" and "Auction Dates."

He realized that the "Silent Hand" wasn't just a group of thugs; it was a system. And as he looked south toward the smog-clogged horizon of Kingston, he knew that his staff and his kindness wouldn't be enough to dismantle the empire of the Hand. He would need to be more than a savior; he would need to be a strategist once again.
