Page 3: The Mint & The Mandate

With the cities built and the borders secured, the survivors of the "Great Grounding" faced a new crisis: the old bartering of scrap and bread was no longer enough to sustain a continent. To grow, the New Reach needed a heart that beat with gold.

The Founding of the Royal Mint

The governors of Kingston, realizing they sat upon the largest concentration of reclaimed precious metals in the world, established the Royal Mint. They didn't just strike coins; they claimed a "Mandate of Progress."

  • The Currency of Stone: The first coins were backed by the value of the white marble and ancient brass pulled from the ruins. This "Gilded Standard" made Kingston the undisputed economic center of the map.

  • The High-Reach Bankers: The families who controlled the mining of the "Impact Crater" became the first true nobility of the modern era. They traded their work-boots for silk robes and their hammers for ledgers.

The Rot in the Ledger

As the Mint grew, so did the distance between the "High Reach" and the "Lower Reach." The prosperity that was promised to all began to pool at the top.

  • The Mandate of Debt: To pay for the massive construction projects like the Kingston Walls, the common folk were forced into high-interest labor contracts. The freedom they felt during the "Long Trek" was slowly replaced by a new kind of chain—economic instead of divine.

  • The Birth of Corruption: Behind the polished counters of the Mint, officials began "skimming the brass." They discovered that by hoarding the wealth and controlling the supply of Sun-Fruit seeds, they could dictate who ate and who starved.

The Gilded Wall

By the end of this century, a physical and social wall had been built. The "New Roots" had produced a beautiful tree, but its fruit was only available to those who lived in the high-society circles of Kingston.

"Gold is a quieter master than the Synod, but it is a master nonetheless. In the Old World, we were Unchosen because of the Prophet. In this one, we are Unchosen because our pockets are empty." — Anonymous Pamphlet found in the Kingston Slums.

The Coming Storm

The Era of the New Roots was reaching its peak, but the pressure was building. In the halls of power, the noble families were becoming paranoid, protecting their wealth with increasingly brutal city guards. In the alleys of the Lower Reach, the people were tired, hungry, and waiting for a spark.

It was in this atmosphere of gilded greed and simmering rage that a child named @Vesper Nyx was born—the final child of the peace, and the first witness to the rot.
