The Year of the Jagged Rhythm (1158 A.F.)

Following the "Heresy of Depth," the continent did not return to its peaceful stasis. Instead, the steady, comforting thrum of the land became erratic. This era, known as the Rusted Pulse, marked the first time the common citizen realized that the ground beneath their feet was failing. The Divine Grant was no longer a silent blessing; it was becoming a loud, mechanical nightmare.

The Desyncing of the Seasons

The most immediate sign of the Rusted Pulse was the failure of the "Eternal Autumn." For a thousand years, the temperature in Havenreach had never fluctuated by more than five degrees. In 1158, the "Atmospheric Vents"—ancient, ornate stone pillars hidden in the forests—began to cough out soot instead of fresh air.

  • The Frost-Snap: Parts of the Shimmering Marches froze solid in hours, killing the glowing flora that provided the region's light.

  • The Heat-Bleed: Conversely, the city of Sanctum Reach suffered "The Simmering," where the marble foundations grew so hot they blistered the feet of those who walked on them. It was as if the cooling systems of the Great Mechanism were stuttering.

The Auditory Plague

The "Iron Silence" of the nights was now impossible to maintain. A sound, described as a "Great Grinding," began to emanate from the earth itself. It was the sound of metal-on-metal, a screeching whine that could be heard from the Spine of Valerius to the Sunder-Cliffs.

  • The Sleep-Deprived: Entire populations began to suffer from hallucinations and irritability caused by the constant, low-frequency vibration.

  • The Echo-Chamber Mines: These mines, which once recorded historical voices, began to play back sounds that had never happened—screams of metal, the roar of venting steam, and a rhythmic ticking that sounded like a countdown.

The Failure of the Light-Spires

The Beacon of First Light and other smaller spires that illuminated the continent began to flicker. They no longer emitted a steady, divine glow; they pulsed with a jagged, strobe-like intensity. During the "Dark-Pulses," the Shrouded Veil would surge forward, swallowing miles of coastline in seconds, only to recede when the light returned. The people realized the "Haven" was a powered effect—and the power was surging.

The First Kinetic Collapse

In late 1159, the first physical "Shedding" occurred. A massive section of the Sunder-Cliffs didn't erode or crumble; it detached. Witnesses claimed it looked as though a giant latch had slipped. The cliffside fell into the sea, revealing a skeleton of copper scaffolding and massive, rusted counterweights behind the rock face.

The High Synod tried to frame this as "The Land Shedding its Old Skin," but the terror was spreading. The people began to realize that Havenreach was not a solid continent, but a gargantuan ship or platform that was slowly shaking itself to pieces. The "Heartbeat" was now a "Death Rattle."
