The Year of the Screaming Bronze (1191 A.F.)

For over a millennium, the Law of the Sunset Silence was the most respected of the Three Prohibitions. To ring a bell or strike a hammer after the sun dipped below the Sunder-Cliffs was considered a death sentence—not by the law of man, but by the law of the land. It was believed that the continent "slept" and that noise would wake something that was never meant to be conscious.

In 1191, the silence was not broken by a person. It was broken by the land itself.

The Ghost-Ring

On the night of the Autumnal Equinox, the Bells of Sanctum Reach—massive bronze instruments that had been locked in iron chains since the Founding—began to toll. There were no bell-ringers in the towers. The chains did not snap; they simply vibrated with such intensity that the bronze struck itself.

The sound was not a melody. It was a rhythmic, discordant shriek that resonated through the hollow foundations of every city on the continent. This event is recorded as the Midnight Toll, and it lasted for precisely six hours.

The Echo-Horrors

The sound acted as a "ping" in the dark, and for the first time, something in the Shrouded Veil answered. The mist was no longer just a weather pattern; it became a gateway.

  • The Static-Stalkers: As the bells tolled, entities made of flickering gray light and jagged edges began to drift inland. They moved with the jerky, unnatural motion of a failing film reel.

  • The Mimicry: These "horrors" did not speak; they played back the sounds of the continent. A stalker might approach a house emitting the sound of a crying child or the smell of Sun-Fruit, only to "de-materialize" anyone who touched it into a cloud of fine, metallic dust.

The Malfunction of the "Shield"

The High Synod’s secret archives revealed a terrifying truth: The "Silence" wasn't for the land’s rest—it was a Stealth Protocol. The noise of the bells had signaled to the outside world that the "Haven" was malfunctioning. The Shrouded Veil was not just a border; it was a cloaking device, and the Midnight Toll had effectively turned the lights on for every predator in the void.

The Night of the Iron Sleep

In an attempt to stop the noise, the Inquisition began cutting the bell ropes and even toppling the clock towers. But the sound shifted from the bells into the very ground. The "Rusted Pulse" (Page 4) accelerated into a frantic, high-pitched scream.

  • The Sleep-Death: Thousands of citizens who were asleep during the toll never woke up. Their bodies remained warm, but their minds were "wiped," leaving behind empty shells that walked in aimless patterns, mimicking the gears turning below.

The Loss of the Night

From that night forward, the "Iron Silence" was gone forever. The nights in Havenreach became a time of terror, filled with the grinding of the Great Mechanism and the flickering shadows of things that had followed the sound of the bells. The Divine Grant had lost its invisibility. The sanctuary was compromised.

Havenreach was no longer a secret. It was a beacon in the dark, and the things in the mist were beginning to realize that the "Haven" was made of meat and metal—and it was breaking open.
