Page 8 -The Fading of the Veil

The Year of the Dissolving Coast (1196 A.F.)

For centuries, the Shrouded Veil was the ultimate guardian—a physical and metaphysical barrier that kept the horrors of the Old World out and the sanctity of the Reach in. But after the Midnight Toll (Page 7) signaled the continent's location, the "Shield" did not just fail; it began to cannibalize itself. This era is known as the Fading, the time when the map of Havenreach began to shrink.

The Great Receding

It began on the Western Shore. Navigators noticed that the crystalline ice-bridges, once hundreds of miles long, were evaporating into a thick, caustic fog. This wasn't natural erosion; the land was being "unwritten."

  • The Vanishing Points: Entire coastal villages disappeared overnight. These were not destroyed by storms or fire; the inhabitants simply woke up to find the horizon had moved to their front doors. By midday, the houses themselves would turn translucent and fade into the gray mist, leaving nothing but the sound of distant, grinding gears.

  • The Loss of the Sunder-Cliffs: The massive limestone guardians that had stood for a millennium began to flake away like rusted iron. Beneath the rock, the "Skeleton of the World"—the copper scaffolding and brass counterweights—was exposed to the salt air and began to seize.

The Encroaching Gray

The mist was no longer a wall; it was an infection. As the Veil moved inland, the atmosphere of Havenreach changed.

  • The Color-Bleed: In areas near the mist, the world lost its pigment. The vibrant reds of the Eternal Autumn and the gold-leaf of the temples turned to a uniform, dull charcoal.

  • The Memory-Fog: People caught in the encroaching mist suffered from "The Drift." They would forget their names, their families, and finally their ability to speak, becoming "Hollows" who wandered toward the sea, drawn by a frequency only they could hear.

The Failure of the Light-Core

The High Synod realized that the Beacon of First Light was the power source for the Veil. But the "Great Mechanism" beneath the crust was no longer producing enough energy to project the shield.

  • The Flicker-Shifts: The Veil began to "stutter." For minutes at a time, the mist would vanish completely, revealing the terrifying reality of the "Old World" beyond—a charred, endless wasteland of ash. These glimpses caused mass hysteria, as the people realized the "Haven" was a tiny, fragile island in a sea of total annihilation.

The Migration of Fear

As the coastlines dissolved, a massive internal migration began. Millions of refugees—both Inscribed and Unchosen—fled toward the center of the continent, toward the Obsidian Monolith. But Havenreach was a finite machine. As the borders shrank, the density of the population became unbearable. The "Sanctuary" was becoming a crowded life-raft, and the wood was starting to rot.

The Fading of the Veil proved that the "Divine Grant" was a temporary lease. The walls were coming down, and for the first time since the Founding, the people of Havenreach realized that there was nowhere left to run.
