Page 9.10- The Great Fissure

The Year of the Severed Root (1204 A.F.)

For centuries, the people of Havenreach took the ground for granted. They walked upon the marble foundations believing the continent was a singular, solid mass anchored to the world's core. In the year 1204, that illusion was violently dismantled. This era is known as the Great Fissure, the moment the "Great Mechanism" finally lost its structural integrity.

The Snap of the Spine

The catastrophe began beneath the Spine of Valerius. The massive mountain range, which acted as the structural "keel" of the continent, suffered a total mechanical failure. A sound described as "the world’s bone breaking" echoed across the Reach.

  • The Continental Break: A jagged crack, miles wide and unfathomably deep, opened from the northern tundras to the southern coasts. Havenreach did not just shake; it split.

  • The Gravity Well: At the moment of the fracture, the gravity stabilization units—ancient devices buried near the 100-foot mark—malfunctioned. For several terrifying minutes, objects and people near the Fissure lost their weight, drifting into the sky before being slammed back down as the "stabilizers" flickered back to life.

The Revelation of the Void

Those who looked into the Great Fissure did not see magma or tectonic plates. They saw the terrifying truth of their home.

  • The Floating Skeleton: Beneath the crust lay an endless expanse of open air and clouds, through which massive copper chains and drive-shafts stretched like the webs of a giant spider.

  • The Great Thrusters: At the very base of the continent’s "hull," gargantuan blue-fire thrusters were visible, sputtering and coughing out gouts of dying plasma. Havenreach was not an island; it was a vessel, and it was no longer flying level.

The Rise of the Sky-Isles

The continent began to fragment into smaller, floating landmasses. The "Great Fissure" was only the first of many.

  • The Drift: Large sections of the eastern provinces detached completely, drifting away into the Shrouded Veil like ships lost at sea. Communication between the "Isles" was severed instantly as the bridge-works and roads crumbled into the abyss.

  • The Oil-Falls: The "Vessels of Vitality" (Page 6) were severed at the break-lines. Massive waterfalls of black, combustible oil began to pour from the sides of the floating islands, raining down into the void below.

The Death of the Marble Cities

Sanctum Reach, the jewel of the Founding, was bisected. The Great Plaza was torn in two, and the Obsidian Monolith now sat on the very edge of a precipice. The "Pre-Carved Foundations" that had once been the pride of the Inscribed became their death traps; as the marble plates shifted and groaned, they acted like giant shears, crushing anything caught between the original seams of the city.

The Final Law Broken

With the land in pieces, the "Law of the Depth" (Page 3) became irrelevant. You didn't need to dig 100 feet to see the bones of the land; you only had to look over the edge of your own backyard. The mystery of Havenreach was gone, replaced by the cold, hard reality of a failing machine. The people were no longer residents of a kingdom—they were passengers on a breaking ship, clinging to whatever piece of the "Gilded Grant" hadn't fallen into the clouds yet.
