Sings of the Endless - Game Master Reference

Signs of the Endless – GM Reference

1. Spiraling Shadows

  • Shadows in the corridor bend unnaturally, curling in endless spirals along walls, ceilings, or floors.

  • Effect: Players feel unsettled; can foreshadow later encounters with Apostle nodes.

2. Filament Traces

  • Thin black wire-like filaments appear along walls or ceilings, slightly moving out of phase with reality.

  • Effect: Players may be tempted to touch or follow them; useful to subtly guide or mislead.

3. Déjà Vu Loop

  • A hallway or staircase seems familiar, repeating previous rooms with minor impossible differences.

  • Effect: Disorientation; possible minor sanity checks. Can loop back to a previously “cleared” area.

4. Whispers in Patterns

  • Distant whispers echo; sometimes they call the player’s name or repeat phrases they just thought.

  • Effect: Creates paranoia or urges players toward or away from certain areas.

5. Spatial Anomaly

  • Angles appear too sharp, corridors bend in impossible ways, or doorways seem slightly misaligned.

  • Effect: GM can describe subtle vertigo or discomfort in the party; hints at nearby Apostle or Forlorn activity.

6. Black Spiral Motifs

  • Spiral patterns appear in metal grates, floors, or walls, etched as if by an unseen hand.

  • Effect: Foreshadows node points, Forlorn shrines, or high anomaly areas.

7. Time Distortion

  • Clocks, watches, or timekeeping devices behave oddly—running backward, pausing, or skipping seconds.

  • Effect: Creates tension, confusion, and potential sanity checks.

8. Echo of Movement

  • Player movement echoes slightly behind them—footsteps or breathing repeat seconds later.

  • Effect: Adds unease; could indicate the Endless “mapping” players.

9. Patterned Failures

  • Lights flicker, alarms trigger briefly, or machinery malfunctions in repeating sequences or spirals.

  • Effect: Suggests the environment is subtly “alive” or aware.

10. Glitching Vision

  • Brief visual glitches appear—walls flicker, textures seem “woven,” black threads stretch and snap in peripheral vision.

  • Effect: Ideal for tension peaks; can precede an Apostle sighting or subtle Forlorn influence.

GM Tips:

  • Use signs sparingly; the Endless’ horror is subtle.

  • Layer 2–3 signs for stronger presence without direct appearance.

  • Place near Forlorn shrines, Apostle nodes, or labyrinthine sections for thematic impact.

  • Encourage players to describe unease; these are psychological as much as environmental cues.
