Destroyers and Destroyer classes

A destroyer is a type of warship used by the United Nations Navy (UNN) and the Martian Congressional Republic Navy (MCRN). Destroyers characteristics generally includes one or more keel-mounted railguns, torpedoes, PDCs, and Epstein Drives.

UNN Destroyers

Andronicus-class Destroyer

The Andronicus-class destroyer is a destroyer class in service with the United Nations Navy (UNN). The second exception to the United Nations Navy standard of being a massive tank with tons of guns, these destroyers instead focus on exceptional sensors and systems for precise hits and can easily scramble the sensors of enemy ships. The Andronicus-class was designed with a hull that is wide near towards the stern of the ship, and tapers up towards the three sensor antennas at the bow of the ship. After the widest part near the stern, there are engineering decks that lead to three massive Epstein drives. Due to its sword-like shape, it is often called the ‘Blade of the United Nations’. While these destroyers are definitely armed, they have almost half the armament of their sister ship class, the Munroe-class light destroyer, with only a single keel-mounted, rapid-fire, high-pressure railgun, full PDC (Point Defense Cannon) coverage, two bow-facing torpedo launchers, and two stern facing launchers. However, the main tactic for the Andronicus-class isn’t the same as other UNN ships with the ‘spray and pray’ method of combat, and instead, the crew invests in sophisticated sensors and lock-on systems that provide a more accurate and a deadly approach to combat.

Munroe-class Light Destroyer

The Munroe-class is an example of a mass-produced UNN warship capable of taking numerous blows that would completely destroy a lesser ship, but at the same time, dish out some serious damage. Its particular set of armament means the class is at its best when operating in groups. A standard detachment of destroyers often consists of six ships roaming solar systems in perfect unison—an intimidating and terrifying sight that is often expertly used to the UNN’s advantage. The ship’s silhouette is designed to make them smaller targets for incoming torpedoes, their point defense network can effectively destroy whatever gets close, and their thick hulls work to prevent anything that does hit from causing extensive damage. The Munroe-class light destroyer makes up the larger portion of UNN fleets. These ships are armed with six torpedo tubes that give them full coverage for enemies and a single keel-mounted railgun in its forward arc. What makes the Munroe-class the most dangerous, however, is its advanced targeting systems that allow its torpedoes and railgun to be exceptionally accurate. These ships have a single goal highlighted in their title: to destroy. They don’t hold dropships or foot soldiers, instead focusing on knocking enemies out with brute force. While not fast, these warships are designed to withstand punishment and hard hits with thick hulls. This makes evading oncoming hits impractical. Instead, they have a thick hull and numerous Point Defense Cannons (PDCs) that maximize defense against incoming torpedoes. The Munroe-class excels at playing the long game in combat, hitting hard while staying alive for as long as it can, so it’s made to maximize survival—and devastation.

Murphy-class Light Destroyer

The Murphy-class light destroyer is a type of destroyer in service of the United Nations Navy (UNN). The Murphy-class is iconically known for its vast weapon armements. The light destroyers are an exercise in how many guns you can strap onto a relatively small ship. The Murphy's of the UNN utilize swarm-style vessel that subverts the traditional expectation of a UNN boat being a brick. Instead, the light destroyer aims to fire as much as it can as fast as it can and outfly any incoming fire. The Murphy-class light destroyer aesthetically looks like other UNN ships with a narrow top with two wide shoulders about midway down the hull; however, that’s where the similarities end. The light destroyer doesn’t have thickly armored hulls, as many other UNN warships do, and has two large Epstein drives attached to the stern of the ship. More than three times larger than the Mulan-class gunship, the light destroyer is still one of the smaller warships in the UNN fleet. The small size is intended to make it more maneuverable; unfortunately, UNN pilots aren’t as well trained on agile ships as their rivals, the pilots of the Martian Congressional Republic Navy (MCRN). The Murphy-class has one fore-mounted, high-charged railgun, and another aft mounted railgun as well. It also has two fore mounted torpedo bays and full PDC (Point Defense Cannon) coverage. The massive antenna array mounted in the forward section house sensors and communication systems. The ship class also has a standard crew of 32, with a bare minimum of 9.

MCRN Destroyers

Banshee-class Destroyer

The Banshee-class destroyer is a destroyer class in service of the Martian Congressional Republic Navy (MCRN). It's 115 meters in length, The class incorporates bleeding-edge Martian stealth tech and advanced sensors and electronics. Although the stealth tech is not the level of more advanced materials developed by Protogen on their Aman-Ra-class stealth frigates, it’s by far the most advanced currently employed by any official military vessel. The Banshee-class have smooth angles with the only bumps in the design being the point defense cannons (PDCs) on either side about midway down the hull, and even those are recessed and can be covered by outer doors that reduce the ships profile. Those PDCS give the ship full defensive coverage, along with 2 torpedo tubes on both sides of its fore and a railgun mounted on its fore. The stern of the ship is blocky and wide with three massive Epstein Drives. The sensors and scrambling systems on the Banshee-class are almost unmatched and provide heavy support for MCRN ships in the case of a battle. Due to their stealth capability and light armament, these ships are often used for reconnaissance or ambushes rather than all-out combat scenarios or escort missions.

Morgaina-class Patrol Destroyer

The Morgaina-class patrol destroyer is the most mass-produced MCRN ship and, like its classification, is generally purposed to patrol and police various sectors of space. Ships of this class are also among the smallest military ships in the entire Sol System. However, despite its relatively small size, the Morgaina-class is faster and sleeker than most military ships while large enough to have a significant weapons suite. It is 31 meters in length and 9 in width, with 3 PDCs and 2 torpedo tubes along its bow, and uses only 1 Epstein Drive. The MCRN went through a fleet-wide upgrade, bringing what were outdated ship designs up to snuff and future-proofing them. This resulted in the creation of the Donnager-class battleship, the Corvette-class light frigate, and the Morgaina-class patrol destroyer--a combination of a torpedo boat and light destroyer that was affordable to mass-produce that could be assigned security details. This is the go-to ship of the MCRN fleet — and even these mass-produced ships are more technologically advanced than most United Nation Navy (UNN) vessels. They’re quite compact and can hang in the hangar bays of Donnager-class Battleships via inverted ceiling clamps. Like most MCRN designs, the Morgaina-class is future-proofed and can be easily modified, with several non-standard units outfitted with stealth capabilities. While the Morgaina-class is equipped with an aggressive weapons suite, it lacks a central point defense cannon (PDC). It makes up for this lack of defense by being among one of the leanest, fastest, and most maneuverable warships in history due to its size and often travels in large numbers, as fleets of Morgaina-class ships will cover one another’s open sides. They can even be used to combat Capital Ships in large numbers.
