The Blood-Sun Marauders (Orcs)

Overview

The Blood-Sun Marauders are a faction of orcs known for their extreme aggression and squalid living conditions, occupying Cave B (Orc Lair) within the Caves of Chaos. They are a "faction under siege," defined by a violent, multi-front struggle for survival and dominance. Unlike the disciplined hobgoblins, the Marauders rely on raw ferocity and a desperate need to prove their martial superiority.

History

The Marauders’ history is a cycle of internecine warfare. Once part of a larger orcish host, the tribe splintered during a failed assault on The Keep. They retreated to the ravine only to find themselves locked in a bitter blood feud with their kin in the adjacent cave (Tribe C). Their recent history is dominated by this stalemate; they are trapped between the Keep's professional soldiers and a rival tribe they consider to be weak pretenders.

Leadership

The tribe follows a "might-makes-right" hierarchy, where leadership is maintained through constant displays of brutality:

  • The War-Chief: A scarred veteran (typically a 3+1 HD orc) who claims the title through blood. His primary goal is to annihilate the rival orc tribe and claim the title of "Greater Chief" over the entire ravine.

  • The Marauder Elites: A group of larger orcs who act as the Chief's enforcers, ensuring that the younger warriors don't desert their posts in the face of the Order of the Iron Bastion.

Security

The Marauders maintain a high state of alert due to their precarious position:

  • Entrenched Defenses: Their lair is filled with filth and debris, which they use to create cover against ranged attacks. They utilize "murder holes" and narrow chokepoints to negate the tactical advantages of organized adventuring parties.

  • Berserker Tactics: When their lair is breached, the Marauders often fight with reckless abandon ($ML 8$ or $9$), preferring a glorious death in combat over the shame of losing their territory to "lesser" kin.

  • Scavenged Weaponry: Their gear is a hodgepodge of stolen armor and rusted blades, but they are masters of using the terrain for sudden, violent ambushes.

Relations

  • The Rival Orc Tribe (Cave C): Their most hated enemy. The Marauders prioritize the destruction of these kin above even the defense of the ravine.

  • Evil Chaos: They are a fringe member of the dark coalition. While they serve the general will of Chaos, they are often viewed as unreliable and "expendable" by the Iron-Grip Phalanx.

  • The Keep: The Marauders view the Keep’s soldiers as the ultimate trophy. Bringing back the head of a Bastion officer is the quickest way for a Marauder to rise in rank.
