The Jagged Maw Tribe is a brutal and territorial faction of orcs inhabiting Cave C (Orc Lair)within the Caves of Chaos. Unlike the more disciplined hobgoblins, the Jagged Maws are defined by their squalid living conditions and an unending blood feud with their orcish cousins in the neighboring Cave B. They are quintessential scavengers and raiders, surviving on the scraps of the ravine and the occasional successful ambush on Keep patrols.
The tribe’s presence in the ravine is marked by a history of failure and resentment. Originally part of a larger orcish warband, they were driven into the caves following a disastrous attempt to raid the southern trade routes. Since settling in Cave B, their history has been a "war of inches" against the rival orc tribe. The Jagged Maws consider themselves the "true" orcs of the ravine, viewing all other inhabitants—even their own kind—as obstacles to be crushed or consumed.
The tribe follows a "might-makes-right" structure where weakness is effectively a death sentence:
The War-Chief: A massive orc (AC 4, HD 3, 15 hp) who wears plate mail and wields a battle axe. He maintains control through public displays of violence and the promise of future loot.
The Chief’s Mate: A formidable fighter (AC 7, HD 1, 5 hp) who assists in overseeing the common chambers.
Elite Guards: A small group of veteran orcs who serve as the Chief's personal enforcers, ensuring that the younger males do not attempt to desert or usurp power.
Security in Cave B is crude but effective, relying on numbers and the naturally claustrophobic environment:
The Watcher: A single sentry is always posted near the entrance, peering through a small window-slit to alert the tribe of approaching threats.
The Alarm System: If an intruder is spotted, the watcher shouts a warning that echoes through the common chambers, bringing 1-12 male orcs (AC 6, HD 1) to the entrance within 1-3 rounds.
Murder Holes & Filth: Their lair is filled with garbage and debris, which they use as cover. The layout is designed to funnel attackers into narrow passages where they can be pelted with stones or jabbed with spears.
The Rival Orcs (Cave B): Their most bitter enemies. The Jagged Maws will prioritize killing a rival orc over almost any other target.
The Order of the Iron Bastion: The Jagged Maws view the Keep as a source of "metal-meat" (armored humans). They are too fearful to attack the fortress directly but regularly target small hunting parties.
Evil Chaos: While they nominally serve the "will of Chaos," they are often snubbed by the Iron-Grip Phalanx, who find the Jagged Maws too disorganized for serious military campaigns.
