Lore Summary: The Shadow of the Kestrels
Vogelgard has always existed in the shadow of the Sentinel Keep. For centuries, the relationship was simple: the villagers left a tribute of silver coins and polished baubles at the Keep’s iron-bound doors every Winter Solstice, and by morning, the tribute was gone—swallowed by the mountain in exchange for a year of relative safety.
But this year, the tradition feels hollow. The witch-light—those sickly, rhythmic flickers of neon-green and ghostly violet—can be seen pulsating from the Keep’s high slits every night. The wards that protect the village perimeter are still active, but they hum with a frantic, overtaxed energy that makes the hair on your neck stand up. The "shield" is holding, but it is thinning.
The Current Crisis
The Stalled Engine: The village's lifeblood, the Kestrel Lumber Mill, sits silent. A massive Fiend (or perhaps a particularly ancient, cunning Werewolf) has claimed the timber yard as its lair. With the mill out of commission, the village cannot repair its defenses or pay its debts.
The Looming Shadows: Captain Vane and his White Stripes have established a camp on the southern ridge, while Kaelen and the Forest Thorns haunt the northern waterfalls. Neither group has entered the village in force yet—to do so would be to declare open war—but their scouts are seen in the treeline like vultures waiting for a dying animal to stop kicking.
The Council’s Desperation: The Triumvirate is barely speaking. Bram is furious that Vane isn't allowed to just "clear the mill"; Elara is terrified that any move will provoke the Thorns; and Thistle is frantically polishing silver for the upcoming Solstice tribute, praying it will be enough to appease the spirits of the Keep.
The Three Pillars of Vogelgard
Bram Veng (Foreman): "The mill is the heart. If the heart doesn't beat, the village dies. If we have to let Vane’s boys in to kill that beast, so be it. Better a Temerian boot on our neck than a Fiend's claw in our chest."
Elara Thorne (Herbalist): "You’re blind, Bram. Vane won't stop at the mill. He’ll turn this village into a graveyard. We need to wait for the witch-light to dim. The mountain is restless; we shouldn't be making noise with steel and fire right now."
Thistle Hawn (Innkeeper): "Peace, both of you! The Solstice is days away. If we don't get the silver to the Keep doors, the wards won't just strain—they'll snap. Let’s focus on the tribute. Maybe the heroes who just walked in can help us find enough silver to make the mountain happy again."
Atmospheric Opening
"The air in Vogelgard tastes of cold iron and anxiety. From the porch of the Sunken Hearth, you can see the distant, unsettling flicker of witch-light dancing atop the Sentinel Keep, casting long, jerky shadows across the valley. To the south, the white banners of Captain Vane’s scouts catch the moonlight; to the north, the waterfalls roar with a hidden elven presence. The village is a circle of flickering torches surrounded by a sea of encroaching darkness. The wards are straining, the lumber mill is a slaughterhouse, and the Council of Three is looking at you not with hope, but with the desperate calculation of drowning men reaching for a jagged rock."
The Choice for the Heroes
The village is at a breaking point. They need:
Silver: To complete the Solstice tribute and keep the wards from failing.
The Mill: To be cleared of the beast (Fiend/Werewolf) so they can resume work.
Diplomacy: To keep Captain Vane and Kaelen from turning the village streets into a battlefield
