@ArlenBridges
Arlen Bridges is the longtime Mayor of Daggerfall and one of the most influential political figures in the region. A skilled negotiator, administrator, and public speaker, he has spent decades balancing trade, defense, taxation, and civic growth while guiding the city through both prosperity and crisis.
Respected by some and criticized by others, Arlen represents stability, order, and institutional authority. Though age has tempered some of his ambition, it has done little to diminish his confidence in his own judgment.
Many believe Daggerfall would not be what it is today without Arlen's leadership.
Many others believe he has remained in power far too long.
Both may be correct.

Bastion Hall
Arlen is a silver-haired half-elf whose age shows more in his eyes than in his posture. Though well past a century old, he remains upright and composed, carrying himself with the confidence of a man accustomed to authority.
His clothing is elegant but noticeably outdated, favoring the fashions of an earlier generation. Tailored coats, embroidered cuffs, polished boots, and formal gloves remain staples of his wardrobe despite changing trends.
He rarely appears without his walking staff, a finely crafted piece of hardwood capped with silver.
Most assume it is simply a concession to age.
Very few realize it is also a wizard's staff.
Arlen is intelligent, composed, and deeply confident in his own judgment.
He believes leadership is a burden that must be carried by those capable of bearing it, and after more than a century in public life, he has become accustomed to being one of those people.
He genuinely cares about Daggerfall and wants the city to prosper.
Unfortunately, he often assumes that what benefits Daggerfall also just happens to align with his own vision for its future.
Arlen possesses considerable patience, political skill, and administrative talent, but he struggles with pride and rarely admits mistakes.
He does not view himself as a tyrant.
He views himself as responsible.
The distinction matters greatly to him.
Born into a prosperous landowning family, Arlen spent much of his early life managing estates, trade agreements, and civic obligations. His aptitude for negotiation and governance quickly became apparent, leading him into local politics and eventually the leadership of Daggerfall itself.
Though educated in the arcane arts during his youth, Arlen gradually abandoned active magical practice in favor of civic administration. Over the decades his reputation as a wizard faded, eventually becoming little more than a rumor known to a handful of trusted individuals.
His greatest personal tragedy came during the Saltjaw Crisis.
His only son, Thomas Bridges, fell beyond Daggerfall's defensive earthworks during a desperate battle outside the city walls.
Arlen demanded the gates be opened.
They remained closed.
Thomas died.
The city survived.
Though decades have passed since that day, the loss continues to shape many of Arlen's decisions and relationships.
Thomas Bridges was Arlen's only child.
Brave but inexperienced, the young man joined the city's defenders despite his father's objections.
During the Saltjaw Crisis, Thomas became separated from the retreating forces and fell beyond the city's defenses while enemy troops advanced between him and the gates.
Arlen demanded a rescue.
Others argued it would doom the city.
The gates remained shut.
Thomas never returned.
Though Arlen rarely speaks of the event, few who know him well fail to recognize its lasting impact.
The wound never healed.
It simply became part of him.
Arlen's greatest strengths are administration, negotiation, and public leadership.
He possesses an exceptional memory for:
Laws
Trade agreements
Tax records
Political obligations
Historical precedents
He can often recall details from meetings decades earlier, frustrating opponents who hope time has buried inconvenient facts.
Within Bastion Hall he is a commanding presence, capable of steering discussions through sheer force of personality and experience.
Even those who disagree with him rarely accuse him of incompetence.
Though most citizens know him only as Mayor, Arlen remains a trained wizard.
His magical education was extensive, though largely neglected during his political career.
Today he rarely casts spells in public.
Many younger citizens are unaware he possesses magical training at all.
Arlen prefers it that way.
He wants to be remembered as Daggerfall's mayor, not one of its mages.
As Mayor, Arlen presides over the Bastion Council and often serves as its public voice.
He frequently finds himself balancing competing interests between:
Security
Trade
Infrastructure
Frontier concerns
Though he generally commands the room, there are two individuals whose opinions carry enough weight to consistently challenge him:
@RosalinMercer
and
@MasterOrik
One because she understands politics as well as he does.
The other because he does not care about politics at all.
A relationship permanently shaped by the Saltjaw Crisis.
Arlen believes Grusk made the correct strategic decision.
He also believes that decision cost him his son.
Both truths exist simultaneously.
He has never fully reconciled them.
A man Arlen respects, relies upon, and occasionally finds infuriating.
Orik's influence comes not from politics but from decades of service and accomplishment.
Even Arlen recognizes there are few people in Daggerfall whose opinions carry more weight than Orik's.
Perhaps the only person on the Council Arlen considers a true equal.
Rosalin is one of the few individuals capable of matching him politically and intellectually.
Their relationship is built on mutual respect, constant negotiation, and the occasional battle of wills.
A dependable officer and capable commander.
Though they do not always agree, Arlen trusts Boren's dedication to Daggerfall and values his perspective on matters of security.
Taps his staff when considering difficult decisions.
Adjusts his cuffs before public speeches.
Quotes old laws from memory during arguments.
Rarely raises his voice.
Maintains eye contact longer than most people find comfortable.
Prefers silence over admitting uncertainty.
Often folds his hands behind his back while listening.
To supporters, Arlen Bridges is the steady hand that guided Daggerfall through decades of prosperity and stability.
To critics, he is an aging politician who has held power too long and grown too comfortable wielding it.
To most citizens, he is simply the Mayor.
He has occupied the role for so long that many struggle to imagine Daggerfall without him.
Whether that is a testament to his success or a warning about his influence depends entirely on who is asked.
Arlen Bridges represents civilization.
Laws.
Taxes.
Institutions.
Order.
He believes cities survive because someone is willing to make difficult decisions.
For over a century, he has been one of those people.
And despite everything he has accomplished, one question still follows him through every council chamber and sleepless night:
Would Thomas have survived if the gates had opened?
Arlen already knows the answer.
He simply wishes he didn't.
