@Bulwark

Overview

The @Bulwark is Daggerfall’s first and last line of defense—a disciplined military division tasked with guarding the city gates, ramparts, and surrounding trade roads. Formed after the Saltjaw Rebellion, it draws veterans from every walk of life: former guards, mercenaries, and soldiers too stubborn to retire. While the @CityWardens police within, the Bulwark watches without. Their oath is carved into the gatehouse stone: “The wall stands because we stand.”

Structure and Command

The Bulwark operates under Marshal Veiran Dorn, a broad-shouldered half-orc with the patience of granite and the temper of a landslide. Dorn rose from a mason’s apprentice to command after saving the eastern gate from collapse during a siege. Beneath him, ranks are divided into three core companies:

  • The Gatewatch: Guards Daggerfall’s four main gates, controlling entry, tolls, and inspection.

  • The Rampart Line: Patrols the walls, mans the siege towers, and trains in formation combat.

  • The Outer Ring: Scouts and riders who patrol the frontier roads, often working alongside adventurers or @Grusk’sGuildAndForge for escort duties.

Each soldier is trained in both conventional warfare and civil evacuation, making the Bulwark as much rescue force as army.

Training and Discipline

Unlike the politically entangled @CityWardens, the Bulwark prides itself on merit and endurance. Every recruit undergoes “The Long Hold”—a ten-day watch without sleep or speech, meant to test resolve. Those who complete it earn the right to bear the Bulwark’s sigil: a golden tower on a field of black. Though disciplined, many units maintain quiet deals with the @ForgehandGuild for better weapon maintenance and occasional indulgence in @MarnieCopperpot’s mead shipments.

Reputation

Among citizens, the Bulwark is respected and feared. Their soldiers are stoic, unsmiling, and rarely seen off duty. Children whisper that they never remove their helmets. Merchants praise their efficiency but curse their tolls. To travelers, the Bulwark is Daggerfall’s immovable face—professional, humorless, but fair.

Relations

  • Allies: The @ForgehandGuild supplies siege parts and armor; @Grusk’sGuildAndForge contributes emergency repairs and custom modifications.

  • Professional Respect: The @CityWardens—shared command roots and overlapping responsibilities often lead to tension, though mutual crises mend relations quickly.

  • Tensions: The @BastionCouncil funds their upkeep but interferes with deployment strategy. The @CrowbellMessengers rely on them for safe passage but resent their inspections.

The Wall and its Secrets

The Bulwark’s walls are older than Daggerfall itself, built upon foundations rumored to predate the First Dawnbreak. Strange runes beneath the masonry hum during storms, and Marshal Dorn forbids excavation. A handful of @ArcaneRegistry auditors were once sent to study the phenomenon—none returned their findings. Some soldiers claim to hear whispers through the stone at night, speaking in a tongue like shifting gravel.

Doctrine

The Bulwark’s creed is pragmatic: “Hold until relieved.” They believe every citizen behind the walls is worth one heartbeat of their endurance, and they trade years of their lives on that principle. Their faith isn’t divine—it’s structural. Stone doesn’t need prayer to stand, only purpose.

Role in the Frontier

The @Bulwark is Daggerfall’s spine. Without them, the @BastionCouncil would collapse under fear, the @CityWardens would drown in unrest, and the @DaggerfallFrontier would swallow the city whole. They endure siege, famine, and politics with the same grim patience. In the end, they know their duty: the wall stands, even if no one else does.
