@LanternRats

Overview

The @LanternRats are Daggerfall’s forgotten cartographers—part thieves, part guides, part ghost stories. Their guild began generations ago when sewer crews started mapping the tunnels beneath the city to avoid collapses. When the work dried up, they stayed underground, selling their knowledge to smugglers and adventurers instead. Today, the Rats control the hidden arteries of @DaggerfallCity, leading travelers through forgotten crypts and storm drains for a price.

Structure and Leadership

The guild is loosely governed by Mother Wick, an aging tiefling with eyes clouded by cataracts and a memory that never falters. Beneath her, the Rats divide into small Clowders of five to seven members, each responsible for a portion of the undercity. Clowders rarely meet; their only unifying symbol is a rusted lantern that burns with green flame. The Rats’ tunnels stretch into old aqueducts, crypts, and abandoned mines—some reaching as far as the @Umberwood foothills.

Code and Practice

Their creed: “Every tunnel has two ends.” The Rats see themselves as survivors, not criminals. They steal when they must, guide when they can, and hide when they should. Each Clowder keeps its own maps carved into bone or painted on oilcloth, sold only to trusted buyers. The Rats’ services include:

  • Safe passage through the undercity.

  • Recovery of lost cargo and bodies.

  • Smuggling, espionage, and rumor delivery.

  • Mapping collapsed or haunted zones for the @BastionCouncil’s engineers.

Relations

  • Allies: The @ShadowMarket relies on their maps to move contraband; the @CrowbellMessengers sometimes hire them to deliver parcels too dangerous for the surface.

  • Enemies: The @CityWardens, who blame them for thefts they rarely commit. The @Bulwark, after a failed inspection team vanished in their tunnels.

  • Betrayal: Years ago, the Rats were double-crossed by the @KoboldBonepickers, who sold their maps to raiders. Ever since, any kobold found in the undercity is marked for death.

Reputation

Surface dwellers fear the Rats but also need them. Their name carries equal parts threat and respect. Children whisper that if you get lost underground, light a candle and whisper a lie—the Rats will guide you out, but you’ll owe them the truth later. Many of Daggerfall’s sewer tunnels contain faint graffiti of lanterns and rat tails—the guild’s unspoken warning: “You’re on our floor.”

Tools and Tricks

Rats favor silence over steel. Their signature tools include collapsible grapnels, hollow-bone pipes for signaling, and gas lanterns filled with “Echofire”—a liquid flame that burns blue and hums faintly when air grows thin. Their leaders carry carved charms shaped like rat skulls, said to rattle when liars speak nearby.

Role in the Frontier

The @LanternRats embody Daggerfall’s underside—resourceful, elusive, and essential. When the @CrowbellMessengers can’t deliver and the @ShadowMarket needs routes unseen, the Rats make the impossible possible. They are the city’s nervous system, crawling through its forgotten veins. Every faction above the ground owes them something, even if none will admit it aloud.
