Levels: 8–9
Tone: Hope flickers; the ground itself seems to breathe.
The air thickens with dusk. The moon now rises before sunset, and the trees of @Umberwood whisper names no one taught them. Even the radiant beacons waver, their light bending as if the forest exhales against it.
Trade, morale, and faith all collapse at once. The @DawnbreakPact grows desperate. @GrusksGuildAndForge is stretched thin, its smiths working sleeplessly to produce radiant oil and silver arms. Every flame feels fragile, every dawn uncertain.
In the midst of this pressure, two truths emerge:
The corruption is accelerating.
The cousins bear the same blood as the Shade.
At a fortified camp near the eastern ridge, the @DawnbreakPact gathers surviving leaders, radiant scholars, and the guild’s representatives.
There, an archivist named Eiran Vale unveils bloodline charts recovered from ruined crusade vaults — tracing the lineage of @SelrikVarn and @GrimjowVarn back centuries.
The final parchment trembles in his hands as he reveals the sealed truth:
“Their mortal line… didn’t end. It lives—here. In you.”
Both @RileyVarn and @MorsenVarn bear dormant traces of the Varn blood, explaining the forest’s strange fixation on them.
The revelation divides the camp instantly. Dawnbreak wants containment. Grusk wants proof. Rilka stands between.
Branch Options:
Stay: Cooperate with Dawnbreak, face interrogation and risk forced “testing.”
Leave: Escape with guild support, earning Dawnbreak’s suspicion and pursuit later.
Reports from miners reveal that the Underforge Caverns are collapsing — tunnels choking with roots, air thick with crimson pollen.
@FinrowTinkfoot warns the forge vents may soon seal completely, suffocating the fires beneath @GrusksGuildAndForge.
The group descends to stabilize the tunnels and discovers something worse: roots moving like veins, pulsing in rhythm with distant heartbeats.
When cut, they bleed faint red sap that whispers as it drips.
Encounters:
2 Sap Horrors (CR 6)
1 Rooted Abomination (CR 7)
Environmental hazard: suffocating spores, rolling collapse checks.
Discovery:
Runes deep in the tunnel match those around the Varn Keep ruins. The corruption is tunneling toward Daggerfall.
Returning to the surface, the group finds the Crowbell system in chaos — routes dead, riders missing.
One courier arrives on foot, armor splintered, clutching a Crowbell charm. When shaken, it bleeds sap instead of ringing.
Event Options:
Investigate the last route through the coastal trail — find half-buried nests of corrupted crows whispering human speech.
Return to guild: discover Marnie’s potion stores spoiled, the nectar turned black.
Revelation: The forest isn’t spreading — it’s seeding. Small nodes of Umberwood growth now appear miles apart, connected underground.
The Dawnbreak scouts capture what they believe to be a lieutenant of @SelrikVarn—a vampiric officer clad in forest-grown armor.
The interrogation turns into horror when sunlight exposure causes not burning, but blooming.
Roots burst from his skin; his mouth flowers into a spiral of thorns. His dying words echo through the camp:
“He does not bleed. He sows.”
Combat Encounter:
1 Root-Bound Commander (CR 8–9 hybrid vampire construct).
3 Thralls (CR 3 each).
Optional assistance from @Rilka or @DawnbreakPact.
Loot:
Bloodless Blade (vampiric longsword now alive; hums when near roots).
Root Fragment (key component for radiant purge experiments).
Back at camp, Lysandra and Copperpot complete analysis of the root fragment. Their findings chill even the Dawnbreak inquisitors:
“It grows by cycle. Every full moon doubles its reach.
One more—maybe two—and the Long Night begins.”
The revelation sets a deadline — one lunar cycle to stop the Umberwood before the sky itself turns red.
Decision Points:
Focus on crafting the Radiant Purge—a potential cure or weapon.
Hunt deeper toward the Varn Keep ruins to strike early.
Evacuate and fortify Daggerfall before the forest reaches it.
Each path carries weight — mercy, strategy, or sacrifice.
The session closes under blood-colored moonlight. Every radiant lantern burns weakly, flickering in rhythm with the roots.
@RileyVarn dreams of roots pulling him toward the crater in the forest.
@MorsenVarn wakes to find his fingertips stained red as if he’d clawed at the earth.
The forest doesn’t wait anymore. It’s already here.
Root Fragment → unlocks Radiant Purge crafting tree (Lysandra & Finrow).
Bloodless Blade → rare +1 weapon (living, whispering hunger).
Faction Shifts:
+15 @DawnbreakPact (if remain and cooperate).
–10 @DawnbreakPact / +15 @GrusksGuildAndForge (if defy and flee).
Unlock: Tier V – The Long Night (Levels 10–11) — final arc before the siege of the Umberwood itself.
