The @SaltjawCorsairs are a ruthless band of sea-raiders turned mercenaries who control Daggerfall’s coastal underbelly. Once a terror of the western seas, they’ve traded open piracy for private contracts and selective violence. They operate from the rotted piers beyond the city walls, where half-sunk ships form their floating base—the Broken Fleet. Their symbol, a shark’s jaw split with an anchor chain, still strikes fear in sailors and merchants alike.
The Corsairs were born from the wreckage of a mutiny. When the Crown Navy collapsed during the Reclamation Wars, its stranded crews turned rogue. Led by Captain Thain Saltjaw, they carved their legend by raiding both merchant vessels and Dawnbreak crusade ships, claiming the sea owed no allegiance. Decades later, Thain’s descendants and imitators keep the fleet alive—patched together by desperation, greed, and loyalty only to the tide.
They once raided Daggerfall’s harbors, burning the docks and killing dozens. During that attack, Jorren “Two-Hands” Bale lost both arms defending @GruskIronveil’s supply convoy—a feud that still echoes in hammer and flame. Grusk’s hatred for them is personal, and any Corsair caught near his guild rarely leaves in one piece.
The Broken Fleet follows a loose command called the Tide Council, made up of five ship captains. They meet only when anchored in the same harbor—otherwise, each captain rules their crew like a small nation. The current First Captain, Mara Saltjaw, is said to be Thain’s granddaughter. Her word is law on the water, her temper as volatile as the sea itself.
The Corsairs live by the “Tide’s Oath”: “Take what’s unguarded, guard what you take.”
They maintain a veneer of honor—no killing prisoners unless paid, no betrayal of crew—but profit always comes first. Crews often wear bone charms carved from sea monsters, said to keep them from drowning. Many Corsairs have begun using black-powder pistons and alchemical shot provided by the @ForgehandGuild’s black-market sellers or through intermediaries in the @ShadowMarket.
Allies: The @ShadowMarket uses the Corsairs for smuggling goods past the Bastion docks. The @CrowbellMessengers sometimes hire them for fast coastal delivery.
Enemies: The @Bulwark Navy, @Grusk’sGuildAndForge, and anyone flying Dawnbreak colors.
Tensions: The @CityWardens occasionally pay them off to “lose” contraband before inspections. Rumors say the Corsairs once traded cursed relics with the @Ashmark assassins.
The Saltjaw Corsairs are both legend and cautionary tale. To common sailors, they’re freedom made flesh; to soldiers, they’re predators of the coast. Children in Daggerfall play “Salt and Stone,” pretending to be Corsairs fighting @Stonewatch veterans. The reality is bloodier—these pirates don’t plunder for survival but for the thrill of the chase and the power to defy every crown and creed.
The @SaltjawCorsairs embody the sea’s chaos that mirrors Daggerfall’s land-bound corruption. They blur the line between outlaw and patriot, mercenary and murderer. When the Dawnbreak fleets sail, it’s the Corsairs who test their mettle first. And when storms roll in from the western sea, the Broken Fleet vanishes beneath the waves—only to return when the moon turns red, ready to claim whatever the tide forgot.
