Classification: Private Military Company / Mercenary Organization
Vesta Commander: Commander Fredrick Margrave
Status: Active
Primary Employer on Vesta: Shozian Syndicate
Primary Areas of Operation: Vesta, Fortuna, contested systems, frontier worlds
Blackwing is an established mercenary company operating throughout known space. Its personnel are drawn from nearly every species and background imaginable: former soldiers, discharged special forces operators, security contractors, deserters, professional guns-for-hire, and criminals who discovered that organized violence pays considerably better than disorganized violence.
Blackwing claims no political or ideological allegiance. The company works for governments, corporations, private interests, and criminal organizations provided the contract is worthwhile and payment arrives on schedule. Its assignments range from legitimate convoy security and facility protection to assassinations, smuggling support, intimidation, and armed raids.
Blackwing's contingent on Fortuna is currently contracted primarily by the Shozian Syndicate, providing professional muscle for operations that require more discipline and firepower than ordinary criminals can provide.
Operations on Vesta are commanded by Commander Fredrick Margrave, a former Sol Federation special operations soldier who received a dishonorable discharge before entering the mercenary trade.
Blackwing maintains professional standards but has few concerns regarding the histories of its recruits. Experience, reliability, and willingness to complete contracts matter considerably more than clean records.
Its ranks include Humans, Felari, Khorin, Vaeylaryn, Hybrids, and other personnel recruited throughout the galaxy. Many are veterans of planetary wars, colonial conflicts, private security operations, or criminal organizations.
Blackwing personnel typically use commercially available or personally owned equipment rather than standardized military issue. Their equipment commonly includes:
Modern RIG armor and sealed helmets.
Assault rifles, battle rifles, shotguns, and sidearms.
Heavy weapons and anti-armor systems.
Combat cyberware.
Surveillance and reconnaissance drones.
Armored civilian and military-surplus vehicles.
Breaching and demolition equipment.
Electronic warfare and communications equipment.
Weapons and armor are frequently modified by their owners. Blackwing identification is usually limited to subdued insignia and unit markings, allowing personnel to remove obvious company affiliation when a contract requires discretion.
Blackwing operates throughout the galaxy wherever armed professionals can find profitable work. Corporate security, convoy escort, counter-piracy operations, military training, bounty contracts, infrastructure protection, and battlefield support provide much of its legitimate income.
Less reputable contracts include assassinations, intimidation, contraband protection, raids, and enforcement for criminal organizations.
On Fortuna, Blackwing maintains only a relatively small contingent concentrated in Vesta. The company has little interest in joining the wider war unless someone offers enough money to justify becoming a direct participant.
Its contract with the Shozian Syndicate primarily involves protecting warehouses, personnel, shipments, meetings, and sensitive criminal operations. Blackwing teams may also escort valuable contraband through dangerous districts or provide heavily armed support when Syndicate business turns violent.
Margrave maintains considerable operational independence and is expected to protect Blackwing's reputation and personnel while keeping the company's involvement in Syndicate activities sufficiently discreet.
Shozian Syndicate: Blackwing's principal employer in Vesta. The relationship is transactional but stable. The Syndicate provides money and access while Blackwing supplies disciplined professional security. Neither organization mistakes the arrangement for friendship.
Sol Federation: Blackwing has no formal allegiance to the Federation. Its criminal contracts make it a potential target for Federation law enforcement and SID investigations. Margrave's history with the Federation military further complicates relations.
Sovereign Systems Republic: The SSR treats Blackwing as a mercenary organization rather than an ideological enemy. Individual contracts and temporary cooperation are possible, although Blackwing's involvement with organized crime attracts Republic scrutiny.
Fortuna Provisional Government: Relations are inconsistent. The FPG views foreign mercenaries profiting from Fortuna's destruction with understandable contempt, while Blackwing regards the resistance according to the needs of whatever contract is currently paying.
Quarantine Security Detachment: Blackwing avoids the QSD and the Quarantine Zone.
