Historical Timeline of the Known Galaxy
This chronology covers the major events shaping humanity, the Sol Federation, the Sovereign Systems Republic, and the present war. Dates use the standard human calendar.
2035 — First Off-World Colonies
Humanity establishes permanent colonies on the Moon and Mars, followed by industrial, scientific, and mining settlements across the inner Sol System.
2077 — The Resource Wars
Competition over dwindling resources, off-world claims, and the expanding space economy erupts into global war.
Earth and its colonies are devastated by nuclear, kinetic, biological, and conventional warfare. Governments collapse, supply networks fail, and hundreds of millions die.
2102 — The Federation Accords
Earth’s surviving governments and major colonies establish the Sol Federation to coordinate reconstruction, regulate resources, and prevent another civilization-ending conflict.
Federation histories later call this the Unification of Humanity.
2150 — The Henshaw Drive
Federation physicists construct the first experimental Henshaw Drive, proving faster-than-light travel possible.
2158 — Beyond Sol
A crewed Henshaw-equipped vessel successfully leaves Sol and travels between stars.
Humanity becomes an interstellar civilization.
2160–2265 — The Colonization Boom
Exploration and settlement expand rapidly beyond Sol. Colonists, corporations, religious groups, prospectors, and Federation authorities establish worlds across thousands of systems.
Mining, agriculture, manufacturing, and interstellar trade drive massive population and industrial growth.
The Federation becomes an expanding interstellar power.
2265 — First Contact
Humanity makes confirmed contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life.
Further exploration reveals civilizations ranging from pre-spaceflight societies to interstellar powers equal or superior to humanity.
2270 — Federation Expansion Accelerates
The Federation begins aggressively securing strategic systems, resources, routes, and inhabited worlds.
Expansion is officially justified as necessary for humanity’s security.
2270–2295 — The Wars of Expansion
Federation expansion ignites decades of war.
Civilizations lacking FTL technology are rapidly conquered, displaced, annexed, or destroyed. Some species disappear entirely.
Advanced powers resist successfully enough to form coalitions and launch counteroffensives, but the Federation survives through its population, industry, centralized military, and captured technologies.
Humanity emerges as one of known space’s dominant powers.
2296 — The Hondo Agreement
Exhausted combatants sign the Hondo Agreement, ending the Wars of Expansion.
Borders are recognized, disputed territories divided, and formal diplomatic relations established.
The Federation retains vast territory and presents the settlement as the beginning of peaceful coexistence.
2296–2380 — The Age of Stability
Nearly a century of relative peace brings major economic growth, technological advancement, and interstellar trade.
Human colonies mature into major worlds while incorporated alien populations become permanent members of Federation society.
Political and economic power remains concentrated among humans and the wealthy Core Systems.
2341 — The Church of Stellar Ascension
Gerald Mercer founds the Church of Stellar Ascension.
Federation authorities later classify Mercer and parts of the movement as dangerous. Mercer is killed during a security raid and declared a martyr by his followers.
His death causes the Church to spread rapidly throughout Federation space.
2390–2450s — The Growing Divide
Tensions deepen between the wealthy Core and the Mid and Outer Rim.
Frontier systems protest heavy taxation, weak representation, corporate exploitation, military interference, and policies favoring the Core.
Alien populations are disproportionately affected, and separatist movements gain broad support.
2459 — The New Provins Massacre
Federation forces fire on civilians during unrest on New Provins.
Attempts to suppress information fail, and leaked evidence spreads outrage throughout the Mid and Outer Rim.
New Provins becomes a symbol for separatists and reformers.
2462 — The Uvano Address
Representatives from numerous Mid and Outer Rim systems reject Federation authority and establish the Sovereign Systems Republic.
The Federation refuses recognition.
Civil war begins.
2462–2470 — The First Federation-Republic War
Federation and Republic forces fight across contested systems.
The Federation cannot quickly defeat the secession, while the Republic lacks the strength to defeat the Federation outright.
Eight years of war end without decisive victory.
2470 — The Ceasefire
A ceasefire ends major hostilities without resolving territorial claims.
The SSR survives as an independent state, though the Federation refuses to formally accept the permanent loss of its former systems.
2470–2568 — The Long Cold War
For nearly a century, both powers expand militaries, fortify borders, conduct espionage, compete for influence, and prepare for renewed war.
Proxy conflicts and border incidents remain frequent but contained.
2490 — The Rise of Fortuna
Fortuna prospers because of its position along major FTL routes.
Trade, finance, shipping, manufacturing, and migration transform it into a wealthy Mid Rim world.
Its capital, Vesta, becomes a vast multicultural megacity.
Fortuna remains an autonomous Federation world.
2568 — The Border Incident
A confrontation between Federation and Republic patrols destroys the FNS Stalwart and RSS Argo, killing roughly 600 personnel.
Both governments blame the other.
2568 — The Shoza III Bombing
Federation and Republic diplomats meet on Shoza III to prevent renewed war.
A bombing kills representatives from both governments. Responsibility remains disputed.
Negotiations collapse, and open war resumes.
2568–Present — The Second Federation-Republic War
War spreads across dozens of systems.
Unlike during the first war, the SSR is now a mature interstellar state with its own industry, professional military, and political institutions.
The conflict becomes a massive war neither side can quickly win.
2575 — The Bombardment of Fortuna
Republic forces attack strategically vital Fortuna.
An SSR fleet blockades the planet and bombards Vesta’s Central Government Sector and military infrastructure.
Federation forces intervene.
The Battle of Fortuna begins.
2575–2580 — The Rains Over Vesta
Five years of war devastate Vesta and severely damage Fortuna’s environment.
Western Vesta remains under Federation control, Eastern Vesta under Republic control, and the ruined center becomes No Man’s Land.
The Fortuna Provisional Government fights both occupying powers.
Bombardment, pollution, fires, and industrial destruction produce near-constant rain, smog, and toxic storms.
2577 — The Tau Dolantus Expedition
The Federation War Council secretly sends twenty warships, scientific vessels, thousands of personnel, and civilian specialists into deep uncharted space.
Their destination is Tau Dolantus.
The expedition’s purpose is highly classified.
Late 2579 — Tau Dolantus Goes Silent
All regular contact with the expedition is lost.
Federation authorities suppress its disappearance.
December 2579 — The Return of the FNS Roanoke
The badly damaged FNS Roanoke, the only known vessel to return from Tau Dolantus, appears near Fortuna.
Federation forces immediately attack their own ship.
The Roanoke survives long enough to enter Fortuna’s atmosphere and crashes in northern Vesta.
A heavily armed quarantine is established around the wreck. Publicly, the ship is listed as another war casualty.
What returned aboard it remains concealed.
2580 — Present Day
The Second Federation-Republic War enters its twelfth year.
Fortuna has endured five years of occupation and warfare. Vesta remains divided among Federation and Republic forces, the FPG, criminals, mercenaries, intelligence services, corporations, and civilians.
The Shozian Syndicate profits from the conflict. Blackwing sells military force to paying clients. The QSD guards the wreck of the FNS Roanoke.
Across known space, billions live beneath borders created by centuries of expansion, conquest, rebellion, and compromise.
On Vesta, those centuries have converged into the present war.
