The Sol Federation Armed Forces are among the largest and most powerful military institutions in known space. They defend Federation territory, secure trade routes, suppress internal threats, conduct planetary invasions, and project federal authority across thousands of systems.
Officially, military service is open to loyal citizens regardless of species. In practice, humans overwhelmingly dominate the officer corps, prestigious combat assignments, military academies, and senior command. Non-human personnel serve throughout the armed forces, but advancement becomes increasingly uncommon at higher ranks. Federation media highlights selected non-human service members as evidence of equality, while many alien personnel experience a considerably different reality.
The principal combat branches are the Federation Navy and Federation Marine Corps, supported by organizations including Sol Federation Special Operations Command (SFSOC) and the Federation Armed Forces Science Division.
Federation doctrine emphasizes centralized command, technological superiority, immense logistical capacity, and overwhelming force. It was developed by a military accustomed to possessing more ships, soldiers, and industry than its opponents. The war against the Sovereign Systems Republic has repeatedly exposed the limitations of those assumptions.
The Federation Navy is the primary instrument of federal power beyond planetary surfaces. Its fleets patrol territory, protect shipping, enforce blockades, transport expeditionary forces, and wage system-wide campaigns.
Its vessels range from patrol craft and destroyers to carriers, battleships, troop transports, and logistical ships. Federation warships emphasize heavy armor, compartmentalization, missile, kinetic, and energy weapons, advanced sensors, electronic warfare, large Marine complements, long endurance, and extensive logistical support.
The Navy maintains its own aerospace wings for fleet defense, interception, strike operations, and space combat. These are organizationally distinct from Federation Marine Corps Aerospace Wings.
Naval doctrine seeks orbital and system superiority before major ground deployments. Enemy fleets are destroyed or driven away, supply routes severed, and strategic targets subjected to orbital attack before Marine formations deploy. Commanders favor decisive engagements intended to overwhelm opponents before they can recover.
On Fortuna, neither the Federation nor SSR has maintained uncontested orbital superiority for long, depriving Federation ground forces of a major assumption underlying their doctrine.
The Federation Marine Corps is the Federation's principal expeditionary ground-combat force. Marines conduct planetary invasions, occupations, boarding operations, counterinsurgency, urban warfare, and security operations.
Marine culture emphasizes discipline, aggression, unit identity, and loyalty to humanity and the Federation. Service carries considerable prestige, with propaganda portraying Marines as embodiments of humanity's determination to survive and dominate a hostile galaxy. This produces highly motivated soldiers while reinforcing a culture in which non-human Marines are frequently expected to prove they belong.
The Marine Corps integrates infantry, armor, aerospace assets, mechs, robotics, artillery, engineers, and electronic warfare into unified combat formations.
Armored vehicles provide transport, reconnaissance, and direct fire. Combat mechs supply mobile heavy weapons and armored support. Marine Aerospace Wings conduct close air support, transport, reconnaissance, and insertion. Combat robots support infantry and defensive positions. Artillery and heavy weapons engage fortified or armored targets, engineers conduct breaching and demolition, and electronic warfare units disrupt enemy communications and targeting.
Commanders concentrate these assets at decisive points and maintain aggressive pressure once an attack begins. The doctrine is devastating when properly coordinated, but dense urban environments such as Vesta make that coordination considerably harder.
Federation Marine Corps Aerospace Wings are organic Marine formations dedicated primarily to supporting troops on or immediately above planetary battlefields. Their duties include troop insertion, close air support, reconnaissance, casualty evacuation, logistics, and rapid redeployment.
On Vesta, the UD-89 family forms the backbone of these operations. Variants use letter designations identifying their configuration, including the transport-oriented UD-89T and attack-oriented UD-89A, alongside numerous specialized models.
After years of warfare, UD-89s passing between Vesta's ruined towers have become an ordinary feature of life under Federation occupation.
Federation forces employ conventional armor alongside increasingly common combat mechs.
The MTAR-45 is a common four-wheeled armored patrol and reconnaissance vehicle used by Marines and military police, providing mobility and protection without the logistical burden of heavier platforms.
The MAG-40 Light Assault Mech provides infantry with heavily armored mobile firepower and can operate in environments where traditional heavy vehicles struggle, particularly urban battlefields. Federation mechs have become recognizable enough that the SSR has developed weapons and vehicles specifically to counter them.
Combat robots such as the MK-9 are integrated directly into Marine formations rather than organized as a separate robotic force. They perform infantry fire support, security, reconnaissance, breaching, ammunition transport, casualty recovery, perimeter defense, and hazardous-environment operations.
Federation combat robots possess sophisticated tactical programming but are not legally sentient. Sentient artificial intelligence is prohibited, and military robots undergo periodic memory and behavioral resets to prevent undesirable developmental anomalies.
Long deployments complicate this policy. Marines routinely name their machines, modify their behavior, and become attached to them despite regulations discouraging exactly that.
Federation Marines wear Sol Federation-manufactured RIG combat armor and helmets, commonly finished in distinctive blue and gold.
The poor camouflage is intentional. Federation planners value immediate recognition and psychological impact, allowing specialized concealment equipment when necessary while ensuring ordinary occupation and combat units unmistakably represent federal authority.
Standard helmets are sealed and integrate communications, tactical information, environmental protection, and identification systems. Marines performing armed duties in RIG armor normally keep them on unless ordered otherwise or regulations permit removal. Civilians in occupied territories therefore often interact with Marines without ever seeing their faces.
Federation equipment doctrine favors standardized, durable weapons capable of functioning across diverse planetary environments.
The M42A1 Combat Pulse Rifle is the standard infantry weapon most closely associated with the Marine Corps. The Armak Systems ASP .43 is a widely issued sidearm carried by Marines, officers, vehicle crews, and other personnel.
Specialized weapons include the Armak Combat Systems ACF-4, a compact folding personal-defense weapon primarily issued to vehicle and aerospace crews, and the Hades Armaments ML-2 "Hellrazor," a heavy laser operated by specialized personnel against heavily armored targets and aircraft.
Sniper, breaching, support, anti-armor, and energy weapons are issued according to mission requirements. The Federation's enormous military-industrial base gives specialized units access to an equally enormous variety of equipment.
