Sovereign Systems Republic Armed Forces (SSRAF)

"Liberty through sacrifice."

The Sovereign Systems Republic Armed Forces, commonly abbreviated as the SSRAF, serve as the military backbone of the Republic and the primary force opposing the Sol Federation. Born from rebellion but forged through decades of war, the SSRAF has evolved far beyond the image of scattered insurgents and frontier militias portrayed by Federation propaganda.

Today, the Republic fields professional fleets, experienced officers, mechanized armies, and specialized units capable of fighting across entire star systems. Though smaller than the Federation military in both manpower and industrial output, the SSRAF compensates through flexibility, decentralized command, and an officer corps encouraged to think independently rather than blindly follow doctrine.

The Republic military is divided into two principal branches:

  • The Republic Fleet

  • The Republic Army

Supporting both branches is the elite Republic Special Operations Command (RSOC).

While the Federation often relies on overwhelming force, the Republic survives through endurance, adaptation, and the simple refusal to surrender.

Military Doctrine

Republic doctrine was born from necessity. From its earliest days, the Republic understood that it could never outproduce or outnumber the Sol Federation. Instead, its military philosophy emphasizes mobility, initiative, and attrition.

Its strategic principles are built around several ideas:

  • Flexible command structures.

  • Decentralized decision-making.

  • Superior logistics management.

  • Strategic withdrawals when necessary.

  • Combined-arms warfare.

  • Precision strikes against critical targets.

  • Long-term attritional campaigns.

Republic officers are expected to adapt to changing battlefield conditions without waiting for orders from distant commanders. Lower-ranking officers possess far greater autonomy than their Federation counterparts.

The Republic understands that it cannot win every battle.

Its goal is to survive long enough to win the war.

The Republic Fleet

The Republic Fleet serves as the first line of defense for the Sovereign Systems Republic and is responsible for protecting trade routes, escorting convoys, supporting ground operations, and engaging Federation naval forces.

Although significantly smaller than the Federation Navy, Republic fleets are modern, professional, and dangerous. Their crews are composed of career sailors, experienced officers, and volunteers from across Republic space.

Republic vessels are known for:

  • High mobility.

  • Advanced targeting systems.

  • Efficient logistics.

  • Modular designs.

  • Long operational endurance.

  • Ease of maintenance.

  • Extensive missile and torpedo armaments.

Republic shipyards cannot match Federation production, forcing engineers to prioritize versatility and survivability over sheer size and armor.

Fleet Doctrine

The Republic Fleet avoids prolonged engagements whenever possible.

Its commanders favor:

  • Hit-and-run strikes.

  • Ambush tactics.

  • Flanking maneuvers.

  • Raids on logistics hubs.

  • Precision missile attacks.

  • Strategic retreats.

  • Coordinated fleet actions.

Rather than meeting Federation battle groups head-on, Republic admirals seek to isolate enemy formations, disrupt supply lines, and exploit weaknesses in command and communication.

Fleet captains are encouraged to exercise initiative and adapt their tactics in real time.

A common Republic saying states:

"A ship lost gloriously is still a ship lost."

The Republic Army

The Republic Army serves as the Republic's primary ground force. Contrary to Federation propaganda, it is not composed of poorly trained rebels armed with scavenged weapons. The Army maintains professional academies, established chains of command, and highly trained combat units drawn from dozens of member worlds.

The Army fields:

  • Professional infantry divisions.

  • Mechanized brigades.

  • Armored formations.

  • Artillery regiments.

  • Combat engineers.

  • Aerospace support units.

  • Planetary defense forces.

Republic soldiers are trained to operate independently, often fighting without immediate support from higher command.

Years of war have produced an experienced officer corps capable of coordinating large-scale military operations across multiple star systems.

Ground Doctrine

The Republic Army specializes in attritional warfare, mobile defense, and battlefield flexibility.

Core principles include:

  • Defense in depth.

  • Elastic front lines.

  • Combined-arms operations.

  • Urban warfare specialization.

  • Counteroffensives.

  • Strategic attrition.

  • Preservation of manpower.

Unlike Federation doctrine, which seeks decisive victories through overwhelming force, Republic commanders often trade territory for time, forcing their enemies into costly campaigns that drain resources and morale.

On worlds like Fortuna, Republic forces have become masters of urban combat, turning ruined cities into defensive fortresses capable of resisting numerically superior enemies.

Republic Special Operations Command (RSOC)

The Republic Special Operations Command, or RSOC, oversees the Republic's elite military units.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Deep reconnaissance.

  • Counterintelligence.

  • Sabotage.

  • Assassination missions.

  • Search-and-rescue operations.

  • Strategic raids.

  • Electronic warfare.

  • Covert insertion behind enemy lines.

RSOC operatives are recruited from every branch of the armed forces and undergo years of training before deployment.

Within the Republic military, they are respected as professionals. Within Federation intelligence circles, they are viewed as some of the most dangerous individuals in the galaxy.

Military Culture

The cultures of the Fleet and Army differ considerably.

Fleet personnel often view themselves as guardians of the Republic's independence, valuing discipline, technical expertise, and cooperation.

Army personnel tend to cultivate a more rugged identity, emphasizing resilience, practicality, and camaraderie forged through years of brutal campaigning.

Despite these differences, both branches share a common belief: that the Republic survives only through sacrifice.

Unlike the Federation military, which is built around hierarchy and obedience, Republic culture encourages initiative and debate among officers. Soldiers are expected not merely to follow orders, but to understand why those orders exist.

Strengths

The SSRAF possesses several major advantages:

  • Flexible command structures.

  • Experienced officers.

  • High morale.

  • Strong local support.

  • Efficient logistics.

  • Effective special operations forces.

  • Adaptability in prolonged conflicts.

Its military doctrine has repeatedly proven capable of frustrating Federation offensives despite overwhelming odds.

Weaknesses

The Republic also suffers from serious limitations:

  • Smaller industrial base.

  • Fewer manpower reserves.

  • Limited shipbuilding capacity.

  • Difficulty replacing losses.

  • Political disagreements between member systems.

  • Dependence on strategic victories.

The Republic cannot sustain catastrophic losses in the same way the Federation can. Every destroyed cruiser, every lost regiment, and every experienced officer matters.

The Battle for Fortuna

The war for Fortuna represents the largest military deployment in Republic history.

Never before has the Republic committed so many ships, soldiers, and resources to a single campaign. Entire fleets patrol the system, while hundreds of thousands of troops fight block by block across the shattered megacities below.

Fortuna has become more than a battlefield. It is a symbol.

For the Federation, it is proof that rebellion can be crushed.

For the Republic, it is proof that even the largest empire in human history can bleed.

The Federation expected to put down an uprising. Instead, it found itself fighting a professional military backed by worlds that had spent decades preparing for the day the core systems came to reclaim them.
