SSR Ship Classification System

Unlike the vast shipyards of the Sol Federation, the Sovereign Systems Republic inherited much of its naval tradition from former Federation member worlds. Early Republic fleets consisted of captured vessels, defecting crews, and locally modified Federation designs. Over decades of war, however, the Republic developed its own distinct naval identity: practical, modular, and built around efficiency rather than sheer intimidation.

Republic ship classes are typically named after ideals, natural phenomena, important worlds, revolutionary figures, and historical moments from the independence movement.

All Republic vessels carry the prefix RSS, meaning Republic Star Ship.

Corvettes

Role: Patrol, reconnaissance, convoy escort, anti-piracy

Corvettes form the backbone of Republic border patrols and convoy security. Small, fast, and inexpensive to maintain, they are commonly deployed in squadrons to harass larger enemy formations and protect civilian traffic.

Classes

Liberty-class Corvette

The most common Republic corvette, designed for speed and long-range patrol missions. Frequently used as scouts and escorts.

Resolute-class Corvette

A newer design emphasizing heavier weapons and improved missile systems at the expense of endurance.

Notable vessels

  • RSS Defiant

  • RSS Horizon

  • RSS Sentinel

  • RSS Valiant

Frigates

Role: Escort, screening, fleet defense

While the Federation has largely phased frigates out, the Republic continues to rely heavily on them due to their versatility and lower production costs.

Classes

Vanguard-class Frigate

The Republic's oldest domestically produced warship, valued for its reliability and ease of repair.

Independence-class Frigate

A modernized frigate optimized for anti-ship combat and convoy protection.

Notable vessels

  • RSS Independence

  • RSS Pathfinder

  • RSS Iron Dawn

  • RSS Bastion

Destroyers

Role: Fleet combat, missile warfare, escort duty

Destroyers form the core striking force of most Republic fleets. Designed to operate independently or as part of larger formations, they emphasize speed and missile saturation over armor.

Classes

Republic-class Destroyer

The standard destroyer of the Republic Fleet, deployed across nearly every major front.

Phoenix-class Destroyer

A newer and more heavily armed class developed specifically to counter Federation naval superiority.

Notable vessels

  • RSS Phoenix

  • RSS Victory

  • RSS Stormbreaker

  • RSS Dawnstar

Cruisers

Role: Fleet command, planetary support, long-range operations

Cruisers serve as the Republic Fleet's primary command ships and backbone for extended campaigns. They often function as mobile headquarters for major operations.

Classes

Constellation-class Cruiser

The workhorse cruiser of the Republic Fleet, balancing firepower, speed, and endurance.

Justice-class Cruiser

A heavy cruiser class developed during the early years of the war, carrying substantial missile and marine contingents.

Notable vessels

  • RSS Justice

  • RSS Perseverance

  • RSS New Carthage

  • RSS Republic's Shield

Battleship

Role: Strategic command, fleet support, orbital supremacy

Unlike the Federation, which maintains several battleships, the Republic possesses only a single active battleship.

Sovereign-class Battleship

RSS Light of Freedom

The RSS Light of Freedom is the flagship of the Sovereign Systems Republic and the only vessel of the Sovereign class ever completed.

Originally laid down in secret shipyards decades before the outbreak of the current war, the vessel was intended to serve as a symbol of Republic independence and a counterweight to Federation naval dominance. Enormous construction costs and wartime shortages ensured that no sister ships would ever be built.

The battleship carries:

  • Heavy railgun batteries.

  • Long-range missile systems.

  • Extensive point-defense networks.

  • Advanced command-and-control facilities.

  • Multiple marine battalions.

  • Aerospace squadrons.

  • Experimental sensor suites.

For the last year, as of 2580, the Light of Freedom has remained deployed above Fortuna, acting as the command center for Republic operations in the system.

Its arrival transformed the campaign, boosting morale across Republic forces and forcing the Federation to commit additional fleets to the theater.

Among Republic citizens, the ship has become a legend.

Among Federation admirals, it has become a problem.

Carriers

Role: Strike craft deployment, marine transport, logistical support

The Republic cannot afford the massive carrier fleets fielded by the Federation. Instead, its carriers are designed to maximize versatility and operate with smaller support groups.

Classes

Liberator-class Fleet Carrier

The Republic's principal carrier, capable of deploying fighters, bombers, and marine divisions.

Wayfarer-class Assault Carrier

A smaller carrier specializing in rapid troop deployments and support operations.

Notable vessels

  • RSS Liberator

  • RSS Morning Star

  • RSS Venture

  • RSS Atlas

Auxiliary and Support Vessels

The Republic's logistical fleet is far smaller than that of the Federation, making support ships some of the most valuable assets in the entire military.

Common support classes

  • Fuel tankers.

  • Medical ships.

  • Troop transports.

  • Fleet tenders.

  • Repair vessels.

  • Electronic warfare ships.

  • Intelligence craft.

Examples

  • Mercy-class Hospital Ship

  • Frontier-class Fleet Tender

  • Pilgrim-class Transport

  • Beacon-class Intelligence Vessel

Naval Philosophy

Republic shipbuilding philosophy reflects the reality of fighting a larger enemy.

Republic vessels prioritize:

  • Speed over armor.

  • Flexibility over specialization.

  • Ease of maintenance.

  • Modular upgrades.

  • Crew survivability.

  • Long operational endurance.

Every Republic captain understands a harsh truth:

The Federation can replace ships more easily than the Republic can replace experienced crews.

As a result, Republic doctrine emphasizes preserving ships whenever possible and avoiding unnecessary losses.
