Official Designation: Strategic Intelligence Directorate
Parent Organization: Sol Federation Executive Security Council
Motto: "Defending our Federation, Securing Order"
Public Status: Officially acknowledged, operational structure classified.
The Strategic Intelligence Directorate, commonly known as the SID, is the Sol Federation's primary intelligence and internal security organization. It combines the roles of foreign intelligence gathering, domestic counterintelligence, electronic surveillance, anti-insurgency operations, and political security into a single institution. To the average citizen, the SID exists somewhere between rumor and reality. Most know the name, but very few understand what it actually does.
On Vesta, the SID operates in both overt and clandestine capacities. Its personnel may appear openly as intelligence officers attached to military headquarters, while other agents disappear into the civilian population entirely. Their true objectives are often known only to a select few within the Federation command structure.

Officially, the SID's role on Fortuna is limited to intelligence analysis and anti-terror operations. In reality, their influence extends much further.
SID agents maintain offices within major occupation centers, military bases, and government facilities. They are known to monitor communications, question civilians, recruit informants, and investigate both SSR activities and potential dissent within Federation ranks.
Only a handful of agents are permanently stationed on Vesta, but their authority often exceeds that of local commanders. Bastion commanders and governors may command armies, yet an SID officer with sufficient clearance can quietly destroy careers with a single report.
The agency has taken particular interest in:
The Fortuna Provisional Government.
Guerrilla networks.
Corruption among occupation officials.
The Roanoke Quarantine Zone.
Unusual technological phenomena.
Signs of SSR infiltration.
The SID's methods are intentionally ambiguous.
Some agents operate openly, wearing uniforms and introducing themselves as intelligence officers. Others spend years under false identities. They recruit criminals, merchants, soldiers, and civilians alike, paying in credits, protection, or promises.
Among Federation Marines, the phrase "Don't let SID hear that" is common enough to pass as dark humor.
To civilians, the agency inspires equal parts fear and fascination. Conspiracy theories surround them, ranging from secret prisons to fabricated terrorist attacks. The truth, as always, depends on who is telling the story.
The SID values results above ideology, although loyalty to the Federation remains paramount. Agents are taught that truth is fluid, information is a weapon, and morality is secondary to stability. Many SID officers genuinely believe that without the Federation, the galaxy would descend into chaos. Others simply enjoy the power that comes with knowing everyone's secrets. Either way, they rarely explain themselves. Intelligence agencies, after all, tend to prefer shadows. It saves them the trouble of answering uncomfortable questions later.
