Overview
The Galactic News Network (GNN) is one of the largest independent news organizations in known space, providing coverage of political affairs, military conflicts, economic developments, and major events throughout the galaxy.
Founded following the First Federation-Republic War, the GNN emerged from growing public distrust of government-controlled media. Citizens of the Sol Federation, Sovereign Systems Republic, and independent systems increasingly demanded access to information beyond the propaganda and carefully selected reporting provided by their respective governments.
The GNN established itself as a politically independent alternative, employing journalists, correspondents, analysts, and broadcasters from numerous species, worlds, and political backgrounds. Its reporting reaches audiences across national borders, often presenting conflicting perspectives on the same events.
However, independence does not necessarily guarantee impartiality. As a privately owned corporation, the GNN remains heavily influenced by advertising revenue, corporate interests, audience demand, and competition for viewership. Sensationalism, selective reporting, political bias, and occasionally outright misinformation have all damaged its reputation.
The Second Federation-Republic War
The outbreak of the Second Federation-Republic War in 2568 dramatically increased demand for independent journalism. With both governments exercising strict control over military information and domestic reporting, millions turned to the GNN for perspectives unavailable through official channels.
Its correspondents report from contested systems, occupied territories, and active war zones, frequently operating under military restrictions or threats of censorship.
Coverage of the ongoing Battle of Fortuna has become particularly popular, with Vesta’s destruction, civilian suffering, and political importance attracting considerable attention throughout known space.
Despite its stated commitment to journalistic independence, the network’s coverage is often criticized by both Federation and Republic authorities, each accusing it of favoring the opposing side.
Reputation and Influence
To many citizens, the GNN represents one of the few remaining sources of information not directly controlled by a government. To its critics, it is simply another powerful corporation that has discovered the profitability of public outrage.
The network has exposed genuine corruption, documented atrocities, and challenged official narratives. It has also published misleading reports, prioritized sensational stories, and occasionally allowed commercial interests to influence editorial decisions.
Nevertheless, its broadcasts remain a familiar presence in homes, military barracks, spaceports, restaurants, and public terminals throughout the galaxy.
The GNN promises to tell the galaxy what is happening. Whether it tells the whole truth is another matter.
