The Southern Highlands and Gravlik Desert

The southern reaches of Vasagarod are defined by harsh, unforgiving landscapes that serve as the primary staging grounds for external threats and the origin of the nomadic tribes seeking to breach the north.

The Gravlik Desert

The Gravlik Desert is a vast, arid expanse to the west characterized by rolling sand dunes, sparse vegetation, and ancient ruins half-buried in the shifting sands. It is a region of extreme temperatures and sudden, violent sandstorms.

  • The Whispering Dunes: This vast expanse of sand is notorious for the mysterious disappearance of countless travelers; locals whisper that the desert itself claims souls, or that something ancient stirs beneath the surface.

  • The Shifting Colossus: Believed to be a manifestation of the desert's wrath, this gargantuan entity of pure sand is rarely seen and almost never survived; many debate whether it is a single sentient being or a natural phenomenon.

  • The Southern Invaders: A formidable coalition of nomadic tribes originating from these sun-scorched deserts. Driven by ancient prophecies and a thirst for expansion, they seek to conquer the fertile northern lands and establish a new dominion.

The Southern Highlands

Bordering the desert and the southern edge of the civilized kingdoms, the Southern Highlands provide a rugged, wind-scarred transition between the deep sands and the northern forests.

  • Terrain and Movement: The region is dominated by steep, loose stone and tangled scrub that significantly slows travel and forces frequent skill checks for those attempting to cross.

  • Environmental Hazards: High altitudes bring thin air and sudden, powerful gusts of wind that make movement hazardous for unwary parties.

  • The Southern Pass: A narrow passage between steep hills, bisected by a swift-moving stream; the geography makes stealth impossible for anyone attempting to move through the area.

  • Velthar’s Desert Watch: A rugged, hastily constructed forward observation post manned by soldiers from the Kingdom of Velthar to detect and report early movements of enemy forces from the south.
