Dunwic

Overview

@Dunwic is @East Anglia's western facing port and a reminder of what conquest leaves behind. It is no longer a center of faith or governance, but a conduit for trade, raiding, and decay. The @Dane tolerate Dunwic because it still functions. The @Saxon remember it because it once mattered.

Primary Role

Coastal trade hub under Danish control

Entry point for Norse raiders and Danish fleets

Economic extraction point rather than administrative center

Geography

Dunwic sits directly on a fragile coastline where land erosion constantly reshapes the city. Streets and foundations crumble into the sea, forcing residents to retreat inland. Shifting sandbanks make navigation dangerous but familiar to locals. The open sea to the east invites Norse presence, while inland roads connect Dunwic to Thetford and the Fens.

People and Culture

Dunwic’s population is fractured and transient.

Danes dominate the docks, trade, and enforcement.

Saxons remain as laborers, fishermen, and craftsmen, many bound by debt or coercion.

@Norse appear seasonally, bringing goods, violence, and instability.

The city feels grim, loud, and restless. No one expects Dunwic to last forever.

Religion and Beliefs

Old Gods are openly acknowledged, particularly those tied to sea, storm, and fate. Shrines appear and vanish quickly. The Faith of the One God is largely suppressed, surviving only in secret. Even believers admit the sea answers louder than prayer.

City Layout

Dunwic is divided into four districts shaped by collapse and retreat:

The @High Ground : Administrative and defensible structures

The @Old Port : Decaying docks and warehouses

The @Sunken Streets : Abandoned and half drowned neighborhoods

@The Cliffward : Shrines, lookouts, and burial grounds

Government

Dunwic is governed by a Danish appointed port reeve rather than a jarl. Authority here is transactional and temporary. Law exists only to protect trade and tribute. Corruption is rampant and tolerated as long as order holds.

Economy

Fishing, salvage, and trade drive Dunwic’s economy. Goods arrive from the sea and leave inland. Many structures are stripped for materials as the city retreats. Wealth is unstable and often short lived.

Narrative Pressure

If Dunwic collapses into the sea or rebellion, East Anglia loses its coastal gateway and Norse pressure increases dramatically.
