Exeter

@Exeter

Role in the World

Exeter is the edge of Saxon control and the gateway to lands that resist it. It is a military necessity and a cultural compromise. What Winchester commands, Exeter negotiates.

Power in Exeter

Exeter answers to @Edward of Wessex, but true authority rests with Reeve @Osric of Exe.

Osric is a Saxon loyalist tasked with holding a city that does not fully belong to him. He governs through negotiation as often as command, relying on local Briton leaders and merchant influence to maintain order. His position is secure only so long as the city remains stable.

People and Culture

Exeter is not purely Saxon. Briton blood still runs through many of its people, and older customs persist beneath a Saxon veneer. Languages mix in the streets. Outsiders are common but rarely trusted. The city lives in quiet tension, where identity is negotiated daily rather than declared.

Economy

@The River Exe serves as a controlled port, where trade flows under watchful eyes. Wool, hides, grain, and tin move through the city, alongside smaller coastal trade. Merchants operate under scrutiny, and unofficial trade persists along the riverbanks and beyond the walls.

Faith and Authority

The @Faith of the One God operates openly but carefully. Priests preach obedience, yet rarely push too hard. Executions are rare. Conversion is encouraged, not forced. The Church knows Exeter could break if pressed.

Magic and the Old Ways

Magic is whispered, not hunted. Seers and healers exist quietly, tolerated so long as they do not challenge authority. Thin places are known and avoided rather than destroyed.
