The Age of Scales: The Dragon Kings and Their Empire

Before the modern era of boomtowns and city-states, the entire world of Arkhaia was ruled by the Dragons. In the region of Vael-Kaelen, a supreme Dragon King held absolute dominion, commanding a court of lesser dragon lords who enforced his will from high crags and mountain thrones. Beneath them, humanoids—including the ancestors of the modern Dragonfolk—served as helpless laborers, miners, and subjects, forced to dig raw Manna from the earth to fuel the ancient empire. In those days, dragons were not mere beasts; they were intelligent, terrifying tyrants who viewed the world below as their personal estate.

The Mind-Rend & The Great Mutation

Everything changed when the catastrophic Mind-Rend Ritual shattered the world's magical equilibrium. The sudden, violent psychic and elemental shockwave fundamentally mutated the dragon species. The sheer pressure of the volatile Flow broke their minds, stripping the Dragon King and his court of their higher intellect and reducing them to feral, instinct-driven monsters.

Worse still, the chaotic energy permanently warped their physical forms. Depending on where the dragons were when the ritual struck—or where they spent the vast majority of their time afterward—their bodies absorbed the local elemental properties, splitting the surviving dragon population into four distinct apex subspecies:

Fire Dragons: Mutated in volcanic calderas and desert basins, developing cracked, magma-infused hides, smoking blood, and searing breath.

Earth Dragons: Mutated in subterranean caverns and deep stone roots, developing dense armor-plate scales, crystal growths, and ground-shaking weight.

Water Dragons: Mutated along coastal cliffs and maritime deltas, developing slick, scaled hides, fluid aquatic grace, and freezing or corrosive breath.

Wind Dragons: Mutated around high mountain peaks and gale-swept skies, developing razor-sharp wing membranes, hollow pneumatic bones, and lightning-laced tempests.

Hatchlings and the Environment

Despite their terrifying mutated lineages, dragons do not hatch with these elemental traits. Every newborn dragon begins life as a standard Red-Scale hatchling.

The Blank Slate: Hatchlings possess no elemental armor, no magma skin, and no specialized elemental resistance—just basic, standard fire breath and the raw potential of youth.

The Environmental Shaping: As a young dragon grows, the environment it inhabits, the food it eats, and the ambient Flow energy it absorbs slowly twist its biology. A hatchling raised in the scorching northern volcanic crags will gradually develop the traits of a Fire Dragon, while one that migrates to the coastal mudflats will slowly morph into a Water or Wind variant.

Modern Ecology and Behavior

Today, dragons act much like hyper-apex predators rather than ancient emperors. They rule over vast, dangerous hunting grounds across the wild edges of Vael-Kaelen, preying on giant canyon fauna, wild beasts, and any unfortunate humanoids or trade caravans that cross into their territory.

While they remain a constant, terrifying threat in the wilderness, direct attacks on major city-states are relatively rare. Centuries of fighting back have taught the dragons a harsh survival lesson: cities possess heavy anti-dragon weaponry, massed ballistas, and disciplined Resistor arcanists who can turn an arrogant predator into a corpse. Consequently, most dragons have adapted by avoiding fortified walls altogether, preferring to stalk the lonely canyon trails, ash-drifts, and jagged crags where they remain undisputed masters of the wild.
