The Fall of Matakor: The First Resistor-Lord and the Origin of the Forgeborn

Long before the modern boomtowns rose from the ashes of the old world, Matakor stood as a terrifying anomaly among mortals. He was a master Resistor of unimaginable ambition who refused to accept the frailty of organic flesh. Driven by a desperate fear of mortality, Matakor ripped his soul from his biological body and permanently anchored it within a towering, master-crafted chassis of heavy arcane-forged armor, powered by a volatile Manna-core heart. He was an immortal titan of iron and high-voltage energy—Arkhaia's first true equivalent of a sovereign warlord.

Surrounding himself with a fanatical cult—now whispered of in the modern day as The Iron Cult—Matakor forged an unstoppable army by forcefully binding the souls of captured victims into metal frames. This dark process gave rise to the first Forgeborn: artificial beings constructed from a fused blend of heavy metal plating, stone internal joints, and dense wood-fiber musculature completely lacking organic organs or blood, driven instead by a vibrant, glowing Manna Crystal chest-core that converts ambient Flow energy directly into life force. Backed by his relentless force of mechanical thralls, he sought to conquer the region.

However, his reign of terror was ultimately cut short by the combined resistance of the era. The free peoples of Arkhaia—combining mortal armies, early defensive Resistor arcanists, and heavy anti-dragon weaponry originally designed to pierce the thick hides of the old masters—massed against him. They realized they could not easily shatter his soul-anchored armor through normal means, so they met his high-voltage magic with overwhelming, coordinated industrial warfare.

In a cataclysmic final battle, a coalition of mortal soldiers and master Resistors overloaded Matakor's grounding network, blowing out his internal circuits and forcing his massive, armored shell into a state of deep, dormant failure. Unable to completely destroy his core, the victors buried the heavy chassis deep underground beneath a barren Dead Vein, sealing him away where the lack of ambient Flow would prevent him from ever booting back up.

In the wake of his defeat, his surviving mechanical thralls were freed from his mind-control, eventually coming together to build a life for themselves as a recognized species. Today, new Forgeborn still emerge—either created as thralls by the lingering cells of The Iron Cult, forged by misguided modern Resistors attempting to replicate his process, or through golems that accidentally spark true sentience via unpredictable Flow exposure.

For centuries, Matakor remained nothing more than a dark legend—a cautionary tale whispered among Resistors about the dangers of losing one's humanity to the current. But time erodes all seals. Deep in the dark, whispered psychic pulses from his dormant core eventually reached the minds of desperate outcasts, drawing a new generation of his Iron Cultists back to his tomb. Piece by piece, feeding him stolen Manna and kidnapped travelers to bolster his hidden army, they have worked in secret to jumpstart his ancient systems, ensuring that every modern Forgeborn carries a deeply personal stake in preventing their creator's return to power.

Where is he located:

The Crucible of Matakor- The hyper-pressurized inner sanctum of the Iron Vault, buried miles beneath the surface, characterized by intense heat, metallic fumes, and the rhythmic pulse of awakening machinery.
