Source and Structure of Magic
The Flow is the volatile, living energy that permeates Arkhaia. It is not an abstract web or a gift from distant deities, but the raw, unrefined power radiating directly from the sleeping Primordial Titans beneath the world's crust. It exists as a constant subterranean current, surging through deep Primal Veins and leaking into the atmosphere like heat or electricity.
Nature of the Flow
To cast magic in Arkhaia, a spellcaster does not gently weave or shape threads. The Flow behaves like high-voltage current or a pressurized liquid. Mortals must actively siphon, ground, and channel this rushing energy through their own bodies and minds.
Arcane Casters use strict runic formulas, metal conduits, or focus items as resistors to safely step down the raw current into controlled spells.
Innate Casters bear bloodlines changed by raw elemental energy, acting as living lightning rods that discharge the Flow naturally.
Primal and Sacred Casters draw upon the energy after it has been filtered through natural cycles, or use sheer willpower and unbreakable oaths to force the wild current into a stable form.
Because there is no divine custodian overseeing the Flow, misdirection or overexertion causes the energy to backfire physically. A failed or strained spell manifests as raw elemental recoil—burning, shocking, or physically straining the caster.
Anomalies of the Flow
Dead Veins: Areas where the local Primordial energy has been completely drained by heavy siphoning. In these silent zones, magic cannot be drawn, and the land feels heavy, barren, and cold.
Primal Surge Zones: Unstable locations where a Primal Vein has ruptured or an elemental dragon has perished. In these areas, the Flow spills out wildly, causing spells to flare unpredictably and warping the local weather.
Manna Crystals: Solidified deposits of crystallized Flow energy found near deep earth fissures. Practitioners often break or consume these raw crystals to fuel immense magical effects without draining their personal reserves.
