Stretching beneath the known cavern systems of Arkhaia, the Underways are a sprawling, abyssal labyrinth of ancient, titan-carved trenches, fossilized leviathan bones, and suffocating, lightless chasms. While the upper subterranean layers hold fortress-cities like Silk-Gasp, the Underways represent the untamed, primordial wilderness of the subterranean realm—a place that existed long before elven feet ever fled into the dark.
Environmental & Physical Nature
Titan-Scale Topography: The Underways are not simple cave tunnels; they are colossal, jagged rifts created when the slumbers of the Primordial Titans shifted the earth during pre-history. Entire subterranean oceans of black water, forests of luminescent petrified fungi, and vertical canyons thousands of feet deep carve through the abyss.
Toxic Manna Inversion: Deprived of surface air currents, raw Manna leaking from dormant Titan veins pool in low-lying caverns as dense, glowing, toxic mist known as Vein-Gas. Exposure causes severe mutations, Manna-burn, or hyper-aggression in living creatures.
Acoustic Dead Zones & Echo Chambers: The strange, highly pressurized stone structure creates surreal auditory hazards—certain expanses swallow all sound into total dead silence, while others amplify a single whisper into a deafening, disorienting roar that drives trespassers mad.
Lore & History
Before the elves descended during the Age of Scales, the ancient, giant Vaelen arachnids hunted the Underways as apex predators. When the elves arrived and merged with the Vaelen to become the Nyctari, they built their grand, militarized citadels in the upper caverns where Manna veins could be safely mined.
To the Nyctari, the Underways are both a sacred ancestral proving ground and a constant warzone. Lower-caste Unmarked laborers are regularly sent into the dark on suicide mining operations to harvest raw materials, while high-caste Anansi commanders deploy elite Chitin-Bound legions into the abyss to hunt its endemic terrors, test raw siege weapons, and purge rival subterranean horrors before they can crawl upward to threaten Nyctari cities.
The Underways are divided into three distinct vertical depths, each progressively more dangerous, pressurized, and mutated than the last:
1. The Upper Shafts (Depth: 0 – 3 Miles Below Surface)
Environment: A network of carved tunnels, ancient mine shafts, and vast subterranean caverns illuminated by glowing lichen and mined Manna veins.
Who Lives Here: This is where the Nyctari civilization resides. High-caste Anansi rule from militarized, stone-and-silk fortress-cities like Silk-Gasp. The Nyctari use these upper shafts to launch surface raiding parties, manage lower-caste Unmarked labor camps, and build siege fortifications to lock down the deeper abysses below them.
2. The Deep Gloom (Depth: 3 – 8 Miles Below Surface)
Environment: The true threshold of the Underways. Sunlight is a distant memory, replaced by pitch-black abysses, petrified fungal forests, and lakes of black, stagnant water. Air currents thin out, and the first pools of toxic Vein-Gas settle in low trenches.
Who Lives Here: The Nyctari do not build cities here—they treat it as a brutal frontier and proving ground. It is inhabited by feral Vaelen Brood-Tyrants, Chasm-Crawlers, and heavily armed Nyctari hunting parties guarding forward outposts to harvest rare Manna-ore.
3. The Titan-Roots (Depth: 8+ Miles Below Surface)
Environment: The absolute bottom of the subterranean world, where the colossal, fossilized limbs of slumbering Primordial Titans rest. The pressure here crushes unarmored travelers, and raw, unrefined Manna radiates directly from the stone, warping gravity, sound, and light.
Who Lives Here: Only nightmare-scale horrors exist at this level—Manna-Gorged Abominations, mindless elemental horrors, and ancient, forgotten beasts mutated by raw planetary energy. Even the proudest Nyctari Archons avoid the Titan-Roots, sealing off the lowest shafts with heavy iron grates to keep what lives below from crawling up into their empire.
