Dark Truths and Secrets

đź”’ The Darker Truths of the Terran Empire

The Terran Empire is old enough that no living person truly knows everything buried beneath its cities, hidden within its charts, or sealed inside the holds of ships that never officially existed. Most of these secrets are not evidence of some grand conspiracy. Some were hidden out of fear. Others were forgotten deliberately. A few simply became more dangerous the more people learned about them.

The Empty Expedition

Nearly eighty years ago, the exploration vessel HMS Wayfarer returned to Victoria after disappearing beyond the charted frontier for eleven years.

The ship was undamaged.

Its solar sails were furled. Its engines remained operational. Meals still sat upon tables. Personal belongings remained inside cabins.

But all seventy-three members of the crew were gone.

The captain's log contained entries covering the entire eleven-year absence, written faithfully in his handwriting. Every entry described an ordinary voyage.

Except the final page.

Across it were six words:

“We should not have mapped it.”

The Navy quietly removed the vessel from service. The Wayfarer's charts were supposedly destroyed.

They weren't.

The Sleeping Machines

Terran miners occasionally uncover machines buried impossibly deep beneath worlds believed to have never supported intelligent life.

Most are dead.

Some aren't.

The oldest examples predate every civilization known to Terran archaeology. Their construction bears uncomfortable similarities to the machinery discovered on Treasure Planet—particularly mechanisms capable of manipulating enormous amounts of matter and energy.

The disturbing implication isn't that Captain Flint discovered unique technology.

It's that Treasure Planet may have been only one installation among many.

Somewhere across Known Space, other machines may still be waiting.

The Black Charts

Every experienced navigator eventually hears stories about the Black Charts.

They supposedly record regions of the Etherium deliberately omitted from ordinary navigation maps.

Some mark unstable stellar phenomena.

Others identify pirate strongholds, quarantined worlds, abandoned colonies, or regions where ships disappear too frequently for coincidence.

But several Black Charts contain something stranger:

routes leading beyond Known Space that are still being updated.

Someone is traveling those routes.

Nobody seems to know who.

The Children Who See the Same Star

Across worlds separated by impossible distances, children occasionally begin drawing the same image.

A black star surrounded by seven smaller lights.

Most never remember why.

Astronomers dismissed the phenomenon as coincidence until researchers discovered drawings of the same arrangement preserved in civilizations thousands of years apart.

There is no known constellation matching it.

Yet every few decades, navigational instruments aboard ships traveling near the frontier briefly register seven unidentified objects surrounding something completely invisible.

Then they disappear.

The First Willfire

Terran scholars teach that Willfire is an extraordinarily rare natural phenomenon occurring among living beings.

That may not be entirely true.

The oldest surviving references don't describe people awakening Willfire.

They describe people remembering it.

Ancient texts recovered from several unrelated civilizations contain variations of the same sentence:

> “Before there were stars between us, the Flame belonged to all.”

Nobody knows what that means.

More troublingly, some ancient machines respond to Willfire practitioners as though recognizing an authorized user.

---

The Ghost Fleet

Sailors traveling far beyond established shipping lanes occasionally report seeing Royal Navy vessels sailing together in formation.

Their designs are centuries obsolete.

Their lanterns remain illuminated.

Their crews never answer signals.

Naval historians have identified several reported ships from old drawings—including vessels confirmed destroyed in battles generations ago.

The fleet always sails in the same direction.

Away from Terran space.

No ship sent after them has successfully followed for more than several hours.

---

The World Beneath Victoria

Victoria's civilization is ancient.

The world beneath it is older.

Deep excavation beneath Crownspire has occasionally revealed foundations that do not correspond to any known period of Terran history.

Entire streets exist beneath the modern city.

Then older streets beneath those.

Then something else.

At extreme depths, stone architecture gives way to enormous smooth chambers constructed from an unidentified black material.

No doors have been found.

But seismic instruments occasionally detect vibrations inside them.

The official explanation is geological activity.

The engineers who maintain the instruments know better.

Something down there has a rhythm.

---

The Missing World

Old merchant records repeatedly mention trade with a prosperous Terran colony called Caliban.

Cargo manifests exist.

Letters survive.

People recorded being born there.

Royal Navy officers list deployments to it.

Yet modern astronomical surveys cannot locate Caliban.

More strangely, surviving charts disagree about where the planet was located.

When historians attempted to reconstruct its position using hundreds of independent records, they discovered something impossible:

Every chart points somewhere different.

And every location is correct according to the surrounding stars depicted at the time.

Either generations of navigators independently made the same extraordinary mistake...

...or Caliban moved.

Flint's Missing Years

Captain Flint accumulated the treasure of a thousand worlds.

Nobody has ever satisfactorily explained how.

Even decades of piracy should not have produced the impossible wealth stored within Treasure Planet.

There are also significant gaps in surviving accounts of Flint's voyages.

Some historians privately suspect Flint wasn't merely stealing treasure.

He was searching for something.

Treasure Planet may have been less a vault than a headquarters from which Flint searched Known Space using the ancient portal mechanism.

If that's true, the most important question isn't where Flint obtained his treasure.

It's what he spent decades looking for and never found.

The Edge of the Etherium

The most closely guarded secret isn't possessed by the Queen, Parliament, or even the Royal Navy.

It belongs to navigators.

The oldest captains know that if you travel far enough beyond established space, the Etherium begins behaving differently.

Stars appear where charts say none should exist.

Compasses slowly turn toward the same direction.

Solar sails catch currents when there are no nearby stars.

Eventually, crews begin dreaming of an enormous light beyond the horizon.

Ships always turn back before reaching it.

Almost always.

Several centuries ago, an unnamed navigator supposedly continued onward.

Years later, a message arrived at a Terran listening station.

There was no ship attached to it.

No coordinates.

Only the navigator's voice:

“The Etherium isn't empty.”

Then, after a long silence:

“And it isn't an ocean.”
