The Rising Captains

⚔️ Corsairs on the Rise

Every Pirate Lord began as somebody whose name was only whispered in dockside taverns. Across the Etherium, a new generation of captains is beginning to attract attention. None yet possess the fleets, territory, or reputation required to claim the title of Pirate Lord.

But sailors have started remembering their flags.

🐺 Captain Rourke “Red Jack” Vane

Ship: The Scarlet Jackal
Crew: The Red Jacks — roughly 70 pirates

The Scarlet Jackal is a lean, crimson-sailed raider built around speed. Her oversized solar sails and modified engines allow Vane to chase merchant vessels that most pirates would never catch. His crew specializes in rapid boarding actions: strike, take the cargo, and disappear before naval reinforcements arrive.

The Rumor: They say Vane is human, tall and narrow-faced, with red hair going gray at the temples and a Royal Navy officer's coat with every insignia torn away. Nobody seems to know whether he actually served.

His growing reputation comes from an unsettling habit: Vane studies Royal Navy patrol schedules better than some Royal Navy officers do.

🦂 Captain Zhara Vex

Ship: Widow's Kiss
Crew: The Widowmakers — roughly 45 pirates

Zhara commands a small black-hulled vessel recognizable by its enormous violet solar sails. Rather than destroy targets, Widow's Kiss approaches under false colors, disables propulsion, boards, takes exactly what it came for, and leaves.

Her crew includes insectoids, reptilians, humans, and several former merchant sailors. They're disciplined enough that some question whether “pirates” is even the correct description.

The Rumor: Nobody agrees on Zhara's species. Tavern stories describe a tall insectoid woman with four narrow arms, dark chitin, golden eyes, and expensive coats tailored specifically around her unusual anatomy.

Supposedly she never raises her voice.

When Zhara becomes quiet, her crew becomes very nervous.

🦈 Captain Garrick Saltmaw

Ship: The Hungry Saint
Crew: The Saints — roughly 110 pirates

The Hungry Saint is an enormous converted merchant vessel covered in mismatched armor, additional gun decks, and repairs accumulated over decades. It is ugly, slow, and extraordinarily difficult to destroy.

Saltmaw doesn't chase ships.

He positions himself somewhere they have to pass.

His crew has developed a reputation for accepting anyone capable of pulling their weight, making the Saints one of the strangest collections of species sailing the frontier.

The Rumor: Saltmaw is supposedly an immense shark-like amphibian whose blue-gray skin is covered with old scars. One eye is missing, replaced by a polished brass mechanism, and several teeth have been replaced with gold.

Sailors claim he eats cannon shot.

This is almost certainly untrue.

Saltmaw refuses to confirm it.

🦊 Captain Elira “Quickhand” Vale

Ship: Fortune's Folly
Crew: The Lucky Bastards — roughly 38 pirates

Fortune's Folly shouldn't still exist.

The small brig has supposedly survived two naval blockades, an asteroid collision, three mutinies aboard other ships, a Procyon ambush, and an accidental voyage through an unstable Etherium storm.

Quickhand specializes in treasure hunting, smuggling, theft, and impossible escapes rather than conventional piracy.

Her crew's unofficial philosophy is simple:

If we're fighting fairly, something has gone terribly wrong.

The Rumor: Elira is said to be a young fox-like alien with orange-gold fur, enormous ears, several earrings, and a permanently mischievous smile. She wears two pistols but supposedly prefers never drawing either.

Half the stories claim she's a genius.

The other half claim she's simply the luckiest idiot in Known Space.

💀 Captain Mordecai Graves

Ship: The Mourning Star
Crew: The Graveborn — roughly 80 pirates

Of the rising captains, Mordecai Graves worries the Royal Navy most.

The Mourning Star is a captured Terran warship whose original colors have been burned away. Graves has rebuilt it into a heavily armed corsair vessel capable of fighting smaller naval ships directly.

His Graveborn are unusually disciplined. They maintain watches, conduct drills, keep written inventories, and operate their gun decks with almost military precision.

There is good reason for that.

Many of them are former Royal Navy personnel.

Graves doesn't simply raid merchant shipping. He attacks naval supply lines, steals military equipment, liberates prisoners, and actively recruits dissatisfied sailors from the Empire.

The Rumor: Graves is human, perhaps somewhere in his forties, with black hair streaked with silver, a trimmed beard, and a burn running across the left side of his face. He still wears an old dark-blue naval greatcoat.

Nobody knows his real rank before becoming a pirate.

But sailors who have seen him fight insist upon one thing:

He gives orders like an admiral.

And recently, taverns along the frontier have begun whispering something that would make both the Royal Navy and established Pirate Lords uncomfortable.

Perhaps the Etherium hasn't seen its next Pirate Lord yet.

Perhaps it's watching five of them compete for the title.
