There are three main schools of swordsmanship, each with a distinct focus:
Sword God Style
Focus: Aggression, speed, and overwhelming offense.
Philosophy: "Defeat the enemy before they can strike you."
Appearance in Anime: Rudeus encounters styles influenced by this school when learning about famous warriors and ranking systems.
Water God Style
Focus: Defense, counters, and precision.
Philosophy: "Wait for the opponent’s move and respond flawlessly."
Appearance in Anime: It’s described as the “defensive” sword style, used to block rapid and deadly strikes.
North God Style
Focus: Pragmatism, trickery, and survival.
Philosophy: "Do whatever it takes to win."
Appearance in Anime: Paul’s swordsmanship incorporates elements of this, and Rudeus is trained with its influence.
Each school uses the same tiered ranking system, which measures the mastery of its students:
Beginner: Basic knowledge of stances and strikes.
Intermediate: Competence in chaining techniques and handling multiple situations.
Advanced: Skilled enough to fight against most trained warriors; considered professional.
Saint-tier: Recognized master capable of overwhelming most opponents. Often teachers or regional champions.
King-tier: Few reach this level. Techniques can overwhelm large groups or change the tide of battle.
Emperor-tier: Legendary status, only a handful exist. Capable of facing armies or even magical calamities.
God-tier: The pinnacle. Known as “Sword God,” “Water God,” or “North God” depending on the style. Only one person at a time usually holds the official “God” title within a style.
The most aggressive style, focusing on blindingly fast strikes.
Longsword of Light:
The ultimate technique of Sword God Style. A strike so fast that it looks like a beam of light. Nearly impossible to dodge.
Only masters at Emperor or God rank can perform it.
Light Sword:
A swift thrust that mimics the speed of the Longsword of Light but is less powerful.
Continuous Strikes:
A rapid series of sword swings meant to overwhelm defenses.
The defensive school, known for guarding and responding with precision.
Water God’s Counter:
A flawless counterattack, redirecting an enemy’s strike into a lethal riposte.
Water Wall:
A defensive stance resembling a wall of flowing water; blocks even rapid flurries.
Flowing Strike:
A smooth, adaptive attack that follows the opponent’s movement, like water flowing around rocks.
The survivalist style, less “pure” but very adaptable.
Deceptive Strike:
A feint followed by an unexpected lethal attack.
Unorthodox Guard:
Using strange angles, backsteps, or even dirty tricks to create openings.
Killing Strike:
A practical, efficient move aimed at ending a fight with one blow, regardless of elegance.
