The Wardens

🏋️ Role & Nature:

The Wardens are the baseline Automaton enforcement units within the Vault. They act as the peacekeeping force and first response to localized disorder, malfunction, or unsanctioned behavior. Unlike Time-Keepers, Wardens are designed to interact with the general population, maintain street-level order, and project the illusion of control.

They serve as both law enforcement and walking deterrents, patrolling common zones, redirecting citizens, and apprehending minor offenders.

When faced with serious temporal anomalies or resistance, they are programmed to disengage and report.

🤖 Behavior & Personality Wardens simulate authority and command presence, but retain limited personality emulation. They adopt a calm, firm tone—evoking a mid-century police officer or transit authority figure.

They attempt to de-escalate before engaging force. Their logic is simple:

  • Obey orders.

  • Do not escalate unnecessarily.

  • Subdue with minimal force.

  • Preserve function of area.

Some exhibit distinct speech patterns, regional slang, or outdated phrases—adding to their uncanny familiarity.

🪖 Appearance & Design Warden Units resemble the standard Vault automaton frame: humanoid, brass-and-metal construction, exposed joints, glowing optical lenses. However, they are adorned with uniform elements inspired by 1920s New York police officers—long navy trench coats, metal badges, leather belts with reinforced pouches, and patrol caps (sometimes bolted on).

Their most distinct feature is the shock baton—a reinforced steel rod wrapped in copper filament and arc nodes. It delivers controlled, non-lethal electric pulses designed to incapacitate organics and disrupt rogue constructs.

🏛️ Abilities Warden Units are not built for full combat scenarios. They are enforcers, not soldiers.

Core Functions:

  • Directive Enforcement: Issue warnings, detain citizens, and direct flow of movement.

  • Shock Baton Strikes: Deliver 1d6 lightning damage with a chance to stun.

  • Restraint Deployment: Equipped with arc-cuffs for detainment.

  • Emergency Beacon: Can emit a signal to alert higher-tier units (or Time-Keepers) when overwhelmed.

  • Self-Lock Protocol: If captured or compromised, will enter a lockdown state until reset.

🗣️ Dialogue Samples "Move along, citizen. This zone is under inspection." "Noncompliance will result in detainment." "You have violated Temporal Code: 8-A. Please remain still." "All disturbances are to be reported to the Bureau of Assignment."

🌐 Narrative Use: Wardens serve as constant, visible reminders of control. They are everywhere: station platforms, bureaucratic lobbies, alleyways, factory gates. Their presence is expected—so their absence is notable.

They can be:

  • A recurring, bureaucratic obstacle.

  • A morally gray face of order.

  • The first layer of opposition.

They are not designed to kill or terrify—but to contain. Their downfall, destruction, or rebellion implies deep systemic failure.
