Oruvek Basin Lore

Oruvek Basin

"The marsh remembers those who wander too far."

Overview

The Oruvek Basin is a vast wetland occupying the southeastern reaches of Vaeloris. Endless marshes, stagnant lakes, winding waterways, and ancient cypress forests stretch for miles across the region. Thick fog blankets the basin for much of the year, reducing visibility and making navigation difficult even for experienced locals.

Despite its harsh environment, Oruvek is rich in wildlife, medicinal plants, rare fish, and valuable natural resources. Hunters, fishermen, trappers, and herbalists regularly travel its waterways, though many never return.

The basin is infamous throughout Vaeloris for its unexplained disappearances. Empty boats are often found drifting through the mist, campsites are discovered abandoned, and travelers frequently report hearing beautiful voices echoing across the water despite nobody being nearby.

Many dismiss such tales as superstition.

The people of Oruvek do not.

Geography

Oruvek is a maze of interconnected marshes, flooded forests, hidden channels, and deep lakes.

Notable Features

  • Endless cypress swamps draped in hanging moss.

  • Vast shallow marshes broken by deeper waterways.

  • Countless unmapped lakes and hidden islands.

  • Ancient ruins slowly reclaimed by the wetlands.

  • Dense fog banks that can linger for days.

  • Unstable peat islands that shift with the seasons.

Many regions remain unexplored, and some areas appear to change over time, making maps unreliable.

Wildlife

The basin is home to a remarkable variety of creatures.

Common wildlife includes:

  • Marsh Drakes

  • Bog Serpents

  • Mire Wolves

  • Giant River Eels

  • Marsh Crawlers

  • Bloodwing Herons

  • Swamp Stalkers

Many predators remain hidden beneath the murky waters until they strike.

The Lake Sirens

Among all the mysteries of Oruvek, none are more feared than the beings known only as the Lake Sirens.

No confirmed description of a Lake Siren exists.

Those who claim to have encountered them rarely agree on what they saw. Some describe beautiful figures standing among the mist. Others insist they never saw anything at all.

Only one detail remains consistent:

The voices.

Hunters report hearing soft singing drifting through the fog.

Fishermen speak of distant calls sounding exactly like loved ones asking for help.

Travelers describe hearing music where no musician could possibly be.

Those who follow the sounds often disappear.

The few survivors usually return confused, unable to explain where they went or what happened.

Whether the Lake Sirens are spirits, creatures, or something far older remains unknown.

Local Beliefs

Generations of disappearances have created strict traditions among those who live near the basin.

Common warnings include:

  • Never follow a voice in the fog.

  • Never travel the lakes alone after sunset.

  • Never whistle across open water.

  • If the swamp suddenly falls silent, leave immediately.

Outsiders often mock these beliefs.

Locals never do.

Veilfall Hollow

"Where the waters vanish beneath the world."

Overview

Hidden deep within the heart of Oruvek Basin lies Veilfall Hollow, one of the region's most closely guarded secrets.

A massive waterfall plunges from towering cliffs into a secluded basin surrounded by ancient stone and dense swamp forest. Most who discover the location see only a beautiful natural landmark.

Few realize that behind the curtain of rushing water lies the entrance to an ancient cavern system older than recorded history.

The Infernal Passage

Behind the waterfall begins a winding network of caverns known as the Infernal Passage.

The tunnels descend deep beneath the world through natural caverns, ancient stone corridors, and forgotten ruins.

As travelers venture deeper, signs of intelligent construction become increasingly apparent:

  • Carved stone pathways.

  • Ancient watch posts.

  • Massive chains embedded within the cavern walls.

  • Bridges crossing bottomless chasms.

  • Faded runes etched into the stone.

The air gradually grows warmer and the darkness deeper.

Far below, veins of glowing crimson rock illuminate the tunnels.

At the end of the passage stands a structure few mortals have ever witnessed.
