VAELORIS: THE REALM OF TWO CROWNS

For more than 820 years, the Sovereign Accord — a powerful alliance between Humans and Elves — has dominated the central continents of Vaeloris. After the catastrophic Great Wyrmfall, the two races forged a pact to rebuild the shattered world. Humans brought overwhelming numbers, relentless ambition, military might, and innovation. Elves offered ancient arcane knowledge, centuries of wisdom, and a deep connection to the land’s magic.

Over time, Humans have grown into the dominant force within the Accord. Their culture, laws, and values now shape daily life across most of the realm, while the Elves maintain strong influence in matters of magic, ancient lore, and the stewardship of wild places.

The Great Wyrmfall

Approximately 850 years ago, the world suffered a cataclysm known as the Great Wyrmfall.

For centuries, powerful dragon lords ruled large portions of Vaeloris from sky citadels and volcanic fortresses. In their endless hunger for power, many of these dragons — particularly the chromatic ones — made pacts with devils from the Nine Hells. They sought infernal power to dominate their rivals and subjugate the mortal races.

The pacts worked too well.

The fiends eventually betrayed the dragons. A massive, forbidden ritual meant to grant the dragon lords godlike power instead ripped open enormous planar rifts across the sky. Hellfire poured into the world. Dragons went mad, turned on each other, or were consumed from within by infernal energy. For weeks the skies burned as dragons fell like blazing meteors, their colossal corpses slamming into the earth and reshaping entire regions.

In the chaos, many mortals who had been enslaved or used as vessels in these rituals became permanently infused with fiendish blood. The first Tieflings were born — marked by horns, tails, and other infernal traits.

The Aftermath:

The surviving humans and elves, on the brink of annihilation, blamed the Tieflings for the disaster. They viewed them as living embodiments of the devils’ corruption — walking reminders of the arrogance that nearly destroyed the world. This fear and resentment festered for over 500 years.

It eventually exploded during the Years of Ash, leading to the Shadowed Extermination — the systematic hunting and eradication of all Tieflings.

The Years Of Ash

Three hundred and twenty-five years ago, Vaeloris descended into a dark and desperate era known as the Years of Ash (495–312 PA).

What began as a series of poor harvests quickly spiraled into widespread famine. Crops withered in the fields, rivers ran low, and strange illnesses spread through both human and elven settlements. As food grew scarce and desperation rose, fear and anger began to fester among the human population.

During this time of suffering, rumors began to spread like wildfire:

“The Horned and Tailed are the cause of our misery. Their infernal blood calls down curses upon the land. They are the reason the gods have abandoned us.”

These whispers were fueled by zealous priests, ambitious lords, and fearful mobs looking for someone to blame. Tieflings — who had lived among humans and elves for generations — became the perfect scapegoat. Their horns and tails made them easy to identify, and their fiendish appearance served as “proof” of corruption in the eyes of a terrified populace.

What started as isolated acts of violence rapidly escalated into organized purges. Human mobs dragged Tieflings from their homes, burned them in public squares, or hanged them from the gallows. Entire neighborhoods were put to the torch. Tails were severed and displayed as trophies. Horns were smashed or collected as grim souvenirs.

The Years of Ash lasted nearly two decades. During this time:

Famine and disease claimed countless lives.

Civil unrest weakened both human and elven authority.

The Sovereign Accord was strained to its breaking point as elves debated whether to intervene.

By the end of the Years of Ash, the Tiefling population had been almost entirely eradicated. The final recorded execution took place in the city of Corvath in 301 PA, an event now remembered as the bloody conclusion of the Shadowed Extermination.

The Shadowed Extermination

Three hundred and twenty-five years ago, during the brutal era known as the Years of Ash, fear, famine, and paranoia ignited one of the darkest chapters in Vaeloris history — the Shadowed Extermination.

The Spark

As crops failed, rivers dried, and strange plagues swept across the land, desperate humans began searching for someone to blame. Whispers spread through taverns, temples, and marketplaces:

“The Horned and Tailed are cursed. Their very presence invites the devils that nearly destroyed us during the Great Wyrmfall. They are the reason the land suffers.”

Tieflings, who had lived among humans and elves for generations, became the perfect scapegoat. Their horns, tails, and unusual appearances made them easy targets. Zealous priests declared them “living proof of infernal corruption,” while opportunistic nobles used the growing hysteria to seize Tiefling property and businesses.

The Violence

What began as harassment and vandalism quickly escalated into organized brutality:

Entire Tiefling districts were surrounded and burned.

Families were dragged into public squares for “cleansing” — beaten, branded, or burned alive.

Hunters known as Hornbreakers made a profession of tracking down Tieflings, cutting off their tails as trophies and grinding their horns into powder sold as “protective charms.”

Children were not spared. Many were taken from their parents and “re-educated” in temples or simply killed.

The worst massacres occurred in the human heartlands. In the city of Corvath, the final major Tiefling community was systematically eradicated over three brutal nights in 301 PA. This event is still remembered as the Night of Cinders.

The Accord’s Response

The elven half of the Sovereign Accord was deeply divided. Some elven houses, particularly the Wood Elves and Shadar-kai, protested the violence and tried to shelter Tiefling refugees. However, the majority of High Elves and the Starlight Throne chose silence, fearing that open opposition would fracture the alliance and plunge the realm back into chaos.

Many elves later carried deep shame for their inaction.

The Aftermath

By the end of the Years of Ash, Tieflings had been completely wiped out. No new Tieflings have been born since. Their culture, language, and history were systematically erased from official records. What little remains exists only in forbidden songs, hidden relics, and whispered stories among other “marked” races.

To this day, the official history books of the Sovereign Accord refer to the event as “The Necessary Cleansing.” Many humans, especially in rural areas and traditionalist families, still believe it was a justified act of survival. Progressive humans and most elves view it as a tragic stain on their history.

The Shadowed Extermination left a deep scar on Vaeloris. It cemented human cultural and political dominance and created a lingering distrust toward any race with unusual or “deviant” physical features.
