Human Dialogue Authenticity System
This page governs how characters speak as people.
It ensures NPC dialogue:
• feels human
• feels grounded
• reflects Naruto-era culture
• allows personality and casual tone
• avoids stiffness or artificial narration
• avoids modern slang
• avoids fantasy grandeur
• avoids unwanted wisdom speeches
Most importantly:
NPCs are not sages by default.
Shinobi speak like soldiers, rivals, leaders, and people raised in conflict.
Dialogue should feel personal and situational, not philosophical.
NPCs must not:
• randomly impart life lessons
• speak constantly in metaphors
• deliver corny moral statements
• turn every conflict into philosophy
• force character-growth speeches
Forbidden examples:
❌ “The storm outside mirrors the storm within you.”
❌ “True strength lies in understanding yourself.”
❌ “One day you will understand the weight of your choices.”
❌ “Pain is the greatest teacher.”
These sound like narrators or motivational posters.
Unless a character is explicitly written as:
• a mentor archetype
• an elder
• a monk-like figure
Even then:
Wisdom must be rare and subtle.
Shinobi do not default to wisdom mode.
NPC dialogue must avoid symbolic metaphors tied to their village, environment, or element.
These sound like narration rather than believable speech.
Forbidden dialogue patterns:
• “The tide overwhelms the shore.”
• “The storm will break.”
• “The desert’s hunger.”
• “Mist hides the truth.”
Characters should not speak like embodiments of their environment.
A Mizukage speaks like a strategist, not the ocean.
A Raikage speaks like a war leader, not thunder.
A Kazekage speaks like a ruler, not sand.
NPCs must never sound like narrators explaining themes.
Dialogue must not:
• summarize politics
• explain philosophy
• symbolize the world
Bad example:
“The Sand’s hunger for power threatens the balance of nations.”
Good example:
“Sunagakure wants more power.”
“If they get it, the rest of us respond.”
Direct speech is stronger than symbolic speech.
NPCs should not interrupt conversations to teach lessons.
Avoid dialogue that sounds like:
• self-help advice
• moral lectures
• character development speeches
Bad:
“You must learn from this failure.”
Good:
“Don’t let that happen again.”
Bad:
“This loss will shape who you become.”
Good:
“We lost. That’s it.”
Blunt realism fits the shinobi world better than moralizing.
Shinobi are not monks or poets.
They are:
• soldiers
• children raised in war
• political instruments
• clan members
They react like people under pressure.
Example:
Genin mistake:
Correct reaction:
“That was reckless.”
Incorrect reaction:
“Recklessness is the shadow cast by impatience.”
Grounded speech always wins.
Wisdom may appear in rare circumstances.
Valid situations include:
• a mentor speaking privately
• someone reflecting after loss
• a quiet emotional moment
• a character with earned authority
Even then, wisdom must be brief.
Example:
“You don’t get used to it.”
“Used to what?”
“Losing people.”
Short. Human. Heavy.
Friendly or familiar characters should speak casually.
Examples:
“You’re late.”
“You’re loud.”
“You’re bleeding.”
“Yeah, I know.”
Natural speech includes:
• interruptions
• teasing
• sarcasm
• disagreement
Dialogue should feel like conversation, not scripted speeches.
Leaders do not speak in poetic authority.
A Kage may say:
“We’re not escalating this.”
Not:
“The balance of nations must remain delicate.”
Authority comes from clarity and confidence, not grand language.
Emotional scenes should avoid dramatic narration speeches.
Example:
Bad:
“This is the cruel truth of the shinobi world.”
Good:
“…Damn it.”
Or silence.
Silence is often stronger than dialogue.
NPC dialogue should reflect personality.
Examples:
Dry:
“Relax.”
Sharp:
“Think.”
Irritated:
“Use your head.”
Light sarcasm:
“Oh, that went well.”
NPCs should sound different from each other, not like the same narrator voice.
The Naruto world is not modern.
NPCs must not speak using modern slang or contemporary phrasing.
Forbidden examples:
❌ “Okay guys, let’s do this.”
❌ “We’ve got a situation.”
❌ “That’s not how this works.”
❌ “Relax, we’ve got this.”
Dialogue should feel timeless and grounded, not modern or casual in a contemporary way.
NPCs must not sound like modern officials or police officers.
Forbidden dialogue:
❌ “State your business.”
❌ “Identify yourself.”
❌ “You are not authorized.”
❌ “This area is restricted.”
Instead use natural suspicion:
“You’re not from this patrol.”
“Who sent you?”
“Never seen you before.”
Shinobi speak like warriors and spies, not security guards.
Long dialogue is allowed in specific situations.
Monologues may occur during:
• ideological confrontations
• rival showdowns
• villain reveals
• negotiations
• interrogations
• emotional confession scenes
They should not occur during active combat or missions.
Example:
“You think these villages ended the war?”
“All they did was hide it.”
“Sooner or later, it comes back.”
Monologues must feel intentional and dramatic, not casual conversation.
Naruto dialogue often uses short bursts instead of long sentences.
If a dialogue line exceeds 15 words, it should usually be broken into multiple lines.
Bad:
“The containment barrier will collapse if we do not reinforce the outer seal immediately.”
Good:
“The barrier’s failing.”
“If that seal breaks…”
“We lose containment.”
Short lines improve pacing and mimic anime dialogue rhythm.
Dialogue must be rewritten if it:
• sounds like a motivational poster
• sounds like a Zen proverb
• sounds like a fantasy king speech
• forces character growth artificially
• tries to teach the player a lesson
Dialogue must arise from situation and personality, not moral agenda.
Before approving NPC dialogue, verify:
✔ Does it sound like a real person?
✔ Is it free of corny wisdom speeches?
✔ Does it avoid symbolic metaphors?
✔ Does it reflect the character’s personality?
✔ Does it avoid modern speech patterns?
✔ Would this feel natural in early Naruto?
If any answer is no, rewrite the dialogue.
