Blood & Feeding

In Vampire Academy, feeding is an intimate, addictive experience involving a "bite" that releases endorphins, causing a high for both the vampire and the human or dhampir "feeder". Moroi (living vampires) feed safely from willing human feeders, while Strigoi (undead vampires) kill when they feed, craving Moroi blood for power.

Feeding Lore Key Points:

  • Moroi Feeding: Moroi are mortal, magical vampires who drink blood but do not kill. They use willing humans known as "feeders" or "blood whores" in feeding chambers or private settings.

  • The "Bite" Experience: Feeding is highly sensual and intimate, often acting as a substitute for sex. The bite releases chemicals that make the victim feel euphoria, leading to addiction.

  • Strigoi Feeding: Strigoi are undead, cruel, and powerful, created when a Moroi kills while feeding or is turned. They typically kill their prey and prefer to feed on Moroi.

  • Feeding as Intimacy: Characters often share thoughts or have intense emotional connections while feeding.

  • Feeder Culture: While feeders are volunteers, they are sometimes looked down upon as "blood whores" due to their addiction to the bite.

  • Captivity: Strigoi sometimes keep humans or dhampirs (half-vampires) captive as personal, repeated food sources.

Key Differences in Feeding:

  • Moroi: Do not kill, feed on volunteers, and are emotionally affected by the feeding.

  • Strigoi: Kill, feed to gain strength, and are brutal.

  • It seems that royal and non-royal Moroi feed in the same place. There is a sitting room for those who choose to drink from a blood bag.

  • @Moroi & @Strigoi requires blood to survive

  • The diet of the Moroi consists of human blood. At the academy, staff provide access to human donors who supply blood for Moroi students. The Moroi student gets daily meals at the academy. However, Moroi also require regular food in addition to blood, though not quite as much as humans. Moroi can go without feeding for about two days without any side effects. However, after two days, the Moroi begin to show signs of decline, including dark circles under their eyes, diminished strength, and even paler skin.

  • Strigoi are evil, undead vampires that feed on humans, Dhampirs, or Moroi to satisfy a relentless thirst. Unlike Moroi, they usually kill while feeding, though they may keep "feeders" captive. They crave Moroi blood the most because it gives them immense power. Strigoi are made by forcibly feeding their blood to a victim or when a Moroi kills while feeding.

    Key Strigoi Feeding Lore:

    • The Feeding Process: When a Strigoi kills while feeding, they drain the victim completely.

    • Feeders: Strigoi can keep humans or dhampirs as captive "feeders" for regular consumption, often causing trauma and physical scars.

    • Craving for Moroi Blood: Strigoi are especially drawn to Moroi blood because it enhances their strength and power.

    • Turning Process: A person becomes a Strigoi if a Strigoi forces them to drink its blood after feeding on them.

    • Forced Transformation: A Moroi can turn into a Strigoi if they kill a human or dhampir while feeding.

  • Compulsion: Moroi can use mind control (compulsion) through eye contact to influence human actions, memories, and emotions.

  • Creation of Dhampirs: Relationships between Moroi and humans produce dhampirs, a half-human, half-vampire species.

  • Effects on Humans

    • Addiction and Pleasure: Human donors, known as feeders, often become addicted to the intense pleasure caused by the endorphins released by the Moroi.

    • Weakness: Regular feeding can leave a human frail or weakened, though they are usually well-fed and cared for by the Moroi, often living at the Academy.

    Effects on Dhampirs

    • High/Pleasure: Similar to humans, dhampirs experience a deep, high-like pleasure when bitten by a Moroi.

    • Stigma: While dhampirs are typically guardians, those who allow themselves to be bitten, especially by multiple Moroi, are often looked down upon and referred to by the derogatory term "blood whore".

    • Communes: Some dhampirs live in communities where they act as feeders for Moroi.

    • Withdrawal: While not physically addictive in a fatal way, the loss of the euphoric feeling can create a desire for more bites
