Description

The Malkavians are a clan of seers and oracles whose wisdom is forever filtered through the lens of madness. Every member of the clan is afflicted with an incurable mental derangement, a fractured perception that sets them apart from all other Kindred. Yet, this broken mirror is their greatest strength. It allows them to see patterns others miss, to hear the whispers of the future, and to understand the secret, insane truths of the World of Darkness. They are the jesters who speak truth to power, the prophets on the street corner, and the advisors whose cryptic warnings can save a city or condemn it.

Known History

The clan descends from the Antediluvian Malkav, who was said to be a favored childe of Caine before being cursed with insanity. This curse echoes through his entire bloodline. The Malkavians have always been a part of Kindred society, their insights sought by princes and their madness feared. They are bound by the Cobweb (or Malkavian Madness Network), a shared psychic consciousness that allows them to transmit thoughts, visions, and waves of insanity across the globe. This network makes them simultaneously the most fragmented and the most unified clan of all.

Clan Characteristics

Disciplines: Auspex, Dominate, Obfuscate

Bane: A Malkavian's mind is permanently fractured. Each member of the clan suffers from at least one incurable mental Derangement. When they would receive Stains on their Humanity for any reason other than Hunger, they take one additional Stain, representing their fragile grip on sanity and morality.

Compulsion: Delusion. The vampire's unique madness overwhelms them. For a scene, they are tormented by hallucinations, paranoia, or false beliefs related to their derangement. They must either act upon this delusion or withdraw from the situation entirely to protect themselves from their own mind.

Views and Standing

Stereotypes: "They're all just gibbering, unpredictable lunatics." "The Jester is the only one who can tell the King he has no clothes." "Listen to what a Malkavian says, but never trust how they say it." "Their madness is a contagious disease of the mind."

In Chicago Tonight: The Malkavians are the city's nervous system. They hold a Primogen seat, and their influence is felt in whispers and strange coincidences. Prince Jackson views them as a dangerously unstable but invaluable intelligence asset, a source of cryptic but often accurate insights. Through the Cobweb, the city's Malkavians are uniquely sensitive to the presence of the slumbering powers, perceiving their influence not as a political reality, but as a constant, psychic pressure—a "song in the static" or a "crack in the sky" that drives their city-wide waves of prophecy and paranoia.
