@The Great Ancient Order of Knights is older than Avaron's reign. Its original oath was not “Protect Avaron.” It was “Guard the First Crown until the Thirteen are called together.” Over centuries, Avaron deliberately encouraged the belief that protecting the First Crown and protecting him were the same duty. Only fragments of the original oath survive.
